Title: 2.3 Manual est between 2000-3000 revs flat spot
Post by keithtcs on Nov 20th, 2006, 10:40am
hi all
i have just purchased a 2.3 petrol manual estate.
i have noticed that only between 2000-3000 revs it seems to drop apx 500 revs for a second then  back up to normalwhen driving or if just putting your foot on the throttle ?????
it only seems to happen between the mentioned revs and only when i ease off the throttle and then put your foot on the gas again it seems like it has a flat spot and can be a little jerky.
i have had a bit of work on the inlet manifold due to a crack and wondered if anything may have been changed or adjusted around the throttle mech ???

i have disconnected the battery to reset the ecu but that does not make any difference .
so having read loads of threads in the forums hoped that maybe someone has had the problem and knows the cure ????
i look forward to hearing from you guys soon
by the way its a fab site full of info and a credit to the desingners
Keith

Kind of similar to what i have with a 2.0 I'm going to try and clean the throttle body, they do get dirty and cause problems but its just a guess

Thanks for the advice.
i looked at the hoses and sensors around the inlet manifold area and found one of the sensors had a plug with three wires going into it i removed the outer protective sleeve and discovered that some of the outer covers of each of the wires had gone brittle and the wires were all touching each other so with a bit of electrical tape seperating and sealing all is now well she drives beautiful.

thanks
Keith

Nice one :)

The looms can be a problem, us with cars built before the latter part of 1996 know only too well the trouble they can cause ;)

Regards, Bruce.

It is a nice drive, the one reason I still hang onto mine ;)

The loom that suffers is the 'fuel cut off' loom which snakes around the top of the engine suffering most of the heat, the loom is about £130 from Ford and isn't too hard to replace. I made one for mine but it's personal choice, a new one ready to go on is much less hassle :)

It isn't just the Scorpio which suffers, me and Simmo were discussing it a while back. I also have a '95 (N) Mondeo and the loom is starting to go on that one too despite it being in better overall condition than the Scorpio with a genuine 25k on the clock, I believe (hope) replacement looms are made from Raychem wire which doesn't go brittle.

Regards, Bruce :)

cheers Bruce,
i will have a look at the loom over the weekend to see if there are any other problems with it.
if it does look shot i think i would buy one ready made,as diy and me don't seem to work well together  :D
While i writing this i wonder if anyone can recommend the best spark plugs to use in my 1996 2.3 petrol est ?? and if anyone knows the model number for them it would be handy as without taking one out i am finding it hard to find the right ones ??
Lastly i have noticed in the colder mornings the car needs a few turns of the key to start and seems to cough and splutter and hesitate a bit till its warmed up ????? any ideas out there ??????????
thanks all
Keith  ;D

The NGK site Here (http://www.ngk.co.uk/) lists PFR6B 11 for the 2.3. As for the starting are you sure the battery is up to scratch?. If you are not getting full power you'll get all sorts of problems. You can check this by using the 'trip'switch on the dash. Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm). Scroll down to No 8 on the list.
