Title: Does the Scorp have a voltage regulator? Post by johndyork on Nov 20th, 2006, 7:26pm Hi - posted a thread a month or two ago about the ignition light remaining on faint when car running after fitting a new alternator. Had Ford test alternator but they disconnected thin wire from alternator and light remained on so they said problem elsewhere. Noticed that lights flicker when engine running in sync with revs - even when revs raised above idle. A pal recently suggested in an email that it could be the voltage regulator and he thinks cars of this age (1996) might have had one, used to cost about £12. Does anyone know if Scorp has a voltage regulator (where located etc) and if red light/flickering lights would be a symptom. Thanks, johndyork. |

Title: Re: Does the Scorp have a voltage regulator? Post by harry.m1byt on Nov 20th, 2006, 8:23pm Only the very early alternators (1970's) they did have a separate regulator. The more modern ones have the regulator built in to the alternator. Have you checked the actual voltage across the battery with the engine running at 3,000 RPM? It should be between 13.8 and 14.4v. Settling to around the lower value when engine has been running a while and replenished the charge. Flickering sounds to me like a faulty diode pack or perhaps a failed winding on the alternator. |

Title: Re: Does the Scorp have a voltage regulator? Post by johndyork on Nov 25th, 2006, 10:14pm Some success - thanks harry.m1byt - voltage across battery checked to exactly what you said (13.8v). To cure flickering lights had tried jump lead from alternator case to battery, no difference, similar for live lead no difference which suggested alternator & engine earthing OK. Cleaned battery connections & earth connections in engine bay just in front of battery and has stopped all light flicker - wonderful to have steady lights again at any revs! Still head scratching as to why ignition light on faint all the time. Still on when removed thin wire from alternator - which I think is the wire to the ignition light (blue) - which suggested problem not at alternator. Does anyone know where the other thin wire goes or what it does? Cheers, johndyork. |
