Title: Me Sunroof's Leaking!
Post by Paul B on Nov 25th, 2006, 5:28pm
As some of you will know, I replaced my sunroof a few weeks ago.

All successfully completed... or so I thought.

Despite having lots of rain, I haven't had a problem until today. But I've now basically got drips coming in around the sunroof operation switch.

Had it apart a short while ago (just as it was getting dark - another good idea Paul !) but couldn't see anything terribly wrong. All I could see was what seemed to be condensation on the motor and droplets on the plastic cover I removed to get there.

Anyone else experienced this? If so, how do you cure it?

EDIT: Never had this problem before I changed the roof. What am I missing?  ???

Check the drains Paul they can become blocked with debris at the bottom end.... where they exit.... I have used flexible curtain wire with the end covered by heat shrink to push down the plastic tubes to make sure they are clear otherwise do not know what might have caused the problem /
Check the Aerial base plate as well if that is leaking some of your clear silicone under the plate fixes that one !

Thanks Dave. I'll look at those things tomorrow.

Just out of interest, where do those drain channels exit?
I ask because when I was doing the change-over I carefully poked some of the aforementioned wire to check for blockages, but came up with nothing.
The wire did stop eventually but I couldn't see the end of it, so wasn't sure what it was stopping against.

By the way, the wire had travelled about 5ft down the tubes.  :o

Paul, Don't they run down inside the screen pillars to exit by the wheel arch?.

hi paul

as snoopy has said, check the aerial base. that's where mine leaks from, every now and again.

Paul FYI the drains exit in the wheel arches but if you used that length then I think they must be clear. But you must be careful doing this as it is possible to puncture the plastic tubing which is why I use curtain wire with the end covered over. the use of strong wire is NOT advised.

The drain tubes can be seen behind the windscren a pillar trim if it is removed,

I used a thin-ish (and floppy) electrical flex to test it Dave. And I eased it down there very slowly & carefuflly.

So if they come out inside the wheel arch, would that be covered by the plastic arch liner I wonder  :-/  If so, its no wonder I never found the end of it!  ;)

I might have another go soon and maybe remove that screen pillar trim too.

Mind you, when opening the roof, there's hardly any water sitting around in the frame/gutter.  I think maybe you could be right about the aerial base leaking.

If there is NO water in the well the then IMHO it must be the aerial base that is leaking. You have loads of sealant in your van use a little blob of that on the base after loosening it.

Yeah, you're right. My brother even refers to me as Mr Mastic (among other things!)

Didn't get chance to do anything today after all, but will check out this aerial ASAP.

Thanks for advice  8)

If it turns out to be something to do with the seal of the sunroof, I can recommend petroleum jelly as a temporary fix.  Used this on a Polo of mine 5 years ago and it still does not leak.  Never got round to a "permanent" fix.
