I had my matrix heater done last week, but I am still expereicing steamy windows. I also had my battery tray redone over the summer, so where do I look now to resolve this problem?

Steamy windows are only when the fan is running without air con. Does this mean the fan is blowing in damp air?

hi there

i would think so. the a/c is there to chill the air. we can use this chilling affect to remove moisture from entering the car as well.

have you changed your pollen filters (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cabinfilters.htm) (3 of)? this should be done every 6 months, but i do mine every year.

No its all the time that I have the fan on. I chaged the pollen filters over the summer and cleaned out the AC drain valves as well.

Maybe its just water getting in the car somehow?

hi there

you could put a sheet of newspaper down in all footwell with the car mats on top, overnight. see if any are damp/wet the next day.

If you don't use it much, it could just be the carpets and etc. absorbing lots of moisture with the cold weather, then as the car warms up it starts to dry out of the interior. Mine did initally suffer some of this when I first got it, but it has now cleared up.

Another possibility is that you have a small leakage from somewhere around the engine, which is immediately evaporating and that moist air is being drawn into the cabin to then condense on the windows.

The newspaper covering the foot well carpets is a good idea to pic up any leakage through the bulkhead. I once had a Granada which had this problem, it turned out to be pin holes due to rust underneath the battery tray.

Thank you. Yes I guess that with all the rain lately water is penetrating inside the cabin. The passenger footwell is very slightly moist, I just checked.
I hope that Ford didn't botch the matrix job and that is the cause!

Butterfingers, I'm getting the same on the Jag. The rear windows are always misted up when I get in, a blast of the AC on defrost and it's cleared in less than a minute. It's been sitting around since august under a cover, has had new filters, I'm certain there's nothing wrong with it and the AC was regassed about 5 months ago.

I've got the Scorp covered up at the mo, I'll let you know how that is when I move it at the weekend in the damp atmosphere.

If you was getting damp in you'd notice the smell and the damp fabric, may be worth getting a couple of those moisture absorbing boxes and putting them on the rear shelf, if it's just condensation they'll have no problem absorbing it. If it is just condensation then nothing to worry about :).

Could be the time of year ?

My windows mist up real bad when it's raining & someone gets in who's wet .....air-con clears it though :)

Air-con doesn't need re-gassing does it ? :)

Can anyone really say where the water maybe able to penetrate in from?
Is it possible that FMD may have disturbed something when they did the matrix heater? I dont want to go pointing the finger because these lot normally do a good job.
Like I said I had the battery tray welded over the summer, this had previously rusted.

The usual suggestions are any grommets in the bulkhead which may have been disturbed. Having just removed a battery side fusebox I can tell you that the wiring from that, which is masses, goes through a large rubber sleeve into the glovebox area. Is it possible that the box was disturbed during the work on the battery tray. The box is held in by two bolts at the front end and once removed there is enough flexibility to locate the rubber sleeve and check if it is seated correctly. If you changed the pollen filters is the cover secure?.

Where the matrix pipes protrude from the bulkhead, have you checked that the piece of foam & metal plate have been screwed back on to the bulkhead.
Water can get in there if it's missing or loose. :)

I've had another look, I reckon it's the old coolant that came into the car causing problems. The way I sussed it was due to a few drops in the factory fitted matwell bit. The collant behaved diferently than water and so I reckon it's the collant from before.

I guess I will have to let it dry out.

Does anyone have any good coolant busting ideas, i.e to evaporate it quickly??

300 miles with the aircon on ;D

Aircon will dry it out very quickly, use the recirculating air button too

If it is really sopping wet (it can seem dry on the surface), I would lift up the carpet where possible and leave it up to get air to both sides. Where it can't be left up, put newspaper under it and it will help draw any water out - keep changing the newspaper until it comes out dry.

Butterfingers, I'm still not convinced you've got a problem with it mate ;)

I gave the Scorp a clean today; hasn't been used since Monday and the windows are so misted they look like Christmas frosting :D, same with the Jag and I've had it undercover.

No water ingress problems with either, a blast of the AC clears it in no time but it soon returns :)

You're probably right Bruce. But thats just me, if its not perfect I panic and think I've got a problem. Maybe I just expect too much from an 8 year old going on 9 car!
