Title: Heater motor fan Post by dwcs on Dec 5th, 2006, 7:16pm I have a 1989 Scorpio which I've owned since new. From time to time the heater blowers would suddenly stop working, (for no apparent reason). It has not got the climatic control system but the old fashioned one with the three control knobs, with the centre one with the little green light in the centre of it which comes on when you press it showing that the A/C is on. Any way the problem was that on top of the heater fan box, under the bonnet there is a small cover, under which is a little unit, when removed, looks as if it has three small electric fire coils on it. These are how the voltage is regulated in order to give the fan the 4 different speeds. In amongst these there is a small resistor or fusible link. This resistor stops working with the result that you only have the heater fan working at high speed or not at all. I have had to change this unit at regular intervals during the life of the car. Sometimes it would last for 6 months or more and sometimes much less. However now it only lasts about 10 mins and at £30 odd each, is getting expensive. Anybody with any ideas as to what the cause of the problem might be? Many thanks, in anticipation, Don. |

Title: Re: Heater motor fan Post by harry.m1byt on Dec 5th, 2006, 9:25pm These resistors were quite delicate and are very susceptible to overload. I would guess that the fan motor is perhaps drawing more current than intended due to being partially clogged up or sticky bearings, thus the 'fire coil' wire wound resistors are over heating and causing the fusible link to open. You can get replacement fusible links for a few pence at Maplins. |

Title: Re: Heater motor fan Post by Simmo on Dec 7th, 2006, 7:24am THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fanrepair.htm) may also help you as it shows the fan motor in detail. If,as is suggested, the motor is clogged up in any way a dose of WD40 may help. This has been done in the past by accessing the motor through the casing once the HBC or Thermal Fuse is out but the link above lets you see what is going on in there. :) |
