Title: New Cossie won't start Post by drawlings on Dec 29th, 2006, 1:45pm Hi all, just brought a new cossie (97). I went to pick it up but it just won't start. The car had been sat there for 3 to 4 weeks. I tried to jump start the car cos the battery was dead, but I was getting a ticking noise (best way i can describe it), which I think it was coming from the starter motor. I am not sure if this means the battery is no good or the starter motor needs replacing. Any ideas please let me know |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by drawlings on Dec 29th, 2006, 2:07pm I have not checked the voltage of the battery, and yes the dash needles did flick around. Also when I was trying to start the car, it sounded like it was not even trying. Just the ticking noise as discribed before Thanks |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by scorpio_man on Dec 29th, 2006, 2:13pm hi there sounds like a flat battery to start with. give it a charge or a jump start and see how you go. hth btw, these cars take a lot of energy to fire up. |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by solarpanel on Dec 29th, 2006, 2:22pm most likely to be the starter stuck as he said that he had tried a jump start.... |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by drawlings on Dec 29th, 2006, 2:23pm Cheers Scorpio_man, I thought it maybe a flat battery, but after 15 mins with a booster battery attached it still did not wanna know. If you think it may still be a battery problem then I will I will change the battery and see if that makes any difference |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by drawlings on Dec 29th, 2006, 3:28pm I am not sure where the starter motor is on these cars, I remember from previous old cars, that if you stick the car in neutral and push it forwards and backwards it can sometimes release the starter motor. Can I apply the same theory to the scorpio Cheers |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by Kjetil S on Dec 29th, 2006, 3:35pm Not sure about the cossie, but on the 16v it's on the (UK) drivers side, at approx two o clock (when looking forward) just in front of the gearbox |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by scorpio_man on Dec 29th, 2006, 4:11pm hi there you can't push it back and forth as there's no gears (auto) ;) you might be able to hit from below. i tried from above on my 2.3, but too much stuff was in the way. cossie can only have more in the way, i would think. hth |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by Highlander on Dec 30th, 2006, 4:37pm I'd still go with the dud battery theory, I've worked on a few that wouldnt start EVEN with a pair of high quality jump leads and a good jumper battery until the cars own battery is replaced with a good one. |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by Trommern on Dec 31st, 2006, 10:35am Hi, had the following mishap with my 95 manual gear Scorpio yesterday: Hit the starter while car was in gear, and park brake fully engaged. Allthough only for a split second, a burnt smell quickly came through the air inlets, and the starter was dead! No ticking or any other sound could be heard upon turning the key again, at least as far as I can recall. Fortunately I was parked in a hill, and managed easily to roll-start. Seems quite obvious the starter burnt because of the strain, but could it be something else? And shouldn't it have a circuit breaker to prevent this? As far as I can see from the manual, only automatic gear models have the R11 starter inhibitor realy, which may do something of the kind? Or I'm I wrong? ??? Would appreciate any comments! - Harald |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by Kjetil S on Dec 31st, 2006, 1:22pm Starter inhibitor should prevent the car from starting in gear, iirc |

Title: Re: New Cossie won't start Post by Trommern on Dec 31st, 2006, 3:03pm Even on a manual gear version? And if so, how can I make the starter work again? - Harald |
