Title: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working... Post by jenks on Jan 7th, 2007, 5:12pm Hey guys, a weird one here. Speedo stopped working altogether yesterday without warning which has now confused the scorp majorly - it knows the cars moving but cant add miles to trip or odo so cant work out fuel economy reckons half a tank will last me 6 miles at the moment!! So no speedo, tacho is jumpy intermittently, and the biggest problem of the lot which started at the same time is that I only have first 3 gears, wont whatever i do knock up to 4th which means its full on drinking the gas at speed cos its nearly always redlining in 3rd!!! Im curious if this has something to do with the speedo being out? shes a 2.9 12v auto Has anyone else had this problem!? I hope so!!!! ??? As usual any help is much appreciated All the best guys Chris |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working..... Post by scorpio_man on Jan 7th, 2007, 5:30pm hi there sounds like the vss is broken. it's a small box on the side of the gearbox. you won't get top gear without it working. hth btw, check all wiring to it, just in case. |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working..... Post by harry.m1byt on Jan 7th, 2007, 8:19pm I'd blame the VSS, except for the fact that he suggested the tacho was jumpy too. What does that mean? Jumping about wildly, or just moving normally in responce to unusual engine speed changes? If wildly it sounds like an electical supply problem to the dash panel. |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working..... Post by Snoopy on Jan 7th, 2007, 8:58pm 4th gear on the 12v is vacum controlled .... So check the small black vacum pipe which runs from under the IACV at the air intake . the speedo sounds like the VSS has gone as you have already been advised . |

If the two problems are connected, the only common place is the supply to the dash, or the dash display itself. The speedo and tach respond quickly, but the temperature guage and fuel guages are heavily damped. Are you noticing any strange variations on these last two? |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working..... Post by Geoff_W on Jan 9th, 2007, 5:38pm That narrows things down a bit. Looks like a type 11. Does anybody now the actual difference between the type 19 12valve petrol and the type 11 24valve petrol? ::) And what difference would that make? (This sounds like your province Harry) |

Impossible to say. Only the tech who designed it would know for sure. It might be as simple as different software, or just a link to be changed on the PCB. There were possibly six Scorps at Babbingtons Leeds and one in the scrap yard on the left (2nd one) a little way past the Middleton Arms (Thorpe Lane I thinks its called). Latter Scorp was I seem to remember a 2.9 12v, though I don't remember whether the instruments were still there or not, it was three months ago. If you fancy a ride over I'll join you. Email is harry.m1bytNOSPAM@tiscali.co.uk -remove the NOSPAM bit. |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working... Post by Geoff_W on Jan 10th, 2007, 10:06am Erm.... wet fusebox :'( suitably dried out seems to have sorted all the problems. I should be picking the car up this evening. Dammit |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working... Post by scorpio_man on Jan 10th, 2007, 10:29am hi geoff at least it's fixed. best to have a look at all the drain holes about the bulkhead. hth |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working... Post by Geoff_W on Jan 10th, 2007, 9:55pm At this point I am feeling tired and emotional (fuming) When I left the car with them yesterday I explained the problems symptoms and my suspicions and asked them to look at the fuseboxes for damp and also to check the VSS However, The autoelectrician seems to have investigated each of the symptoms rather than having a look at the fusebox including removing the instrument console telling me that that was were the fault was then ringing me this morning to tell me that the fusebox is wet and I now have a bill for eight hours labour, in the process he seems to have broken the odometer reset so I can no longer get into diagnostic mode and it looks as if he has not reconnected the light to the computer lcd or dislodged the bulb. As a final pain they have advised me that the speedo is out of action because of the VSS. AAAAGGGGGHHHHH |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working... Post by jenks on Jan 11th, 2007, 6:04pm Right, well thanks for the info guys and sorry for delay getting back. Seems the car sorted itself out - things got a mind of its own bless it!!! Got in it to move it up the road as to not annoy neighbours as couldnt get it sorted for a while and no power - no c/locking, no lights on dash, nowt! So checked fuese first all ok, fuseboxes dry etc etc. last resort jumped it off my van and (i know its dodgy) and she started ok. Drove it round block checked battery - taking charge but obviously not holding it. Weird thing was, after i jumped it and got it going speedo is fine, 4th gear working everything back to normal. Tacho still jumps about sometimes but can live with that! Fitted new battery and she's been totally fine since (except tacho) So.....now we all know Cheers guys CHris |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working... Post by TiberiuS on Jan 12th, 2007, 8:49pm Jenks, I'd bet my life on a dodgy sensor or two. Did you try the new VSS? @Ultima, could indeed be the VSS. They're not expensive so would be worth trying a new one. Bad sensrs will mess modern cars about like hell. Regards, Bruce. |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working... Post by Geoff_W on Jan 12th, 2007, 10:41pm Ah well the story goes on, watch this space - fusebox in a particulary bad way so needed new one and then the problems recur a third time it seems that loom in the engine bay is breaking down so problems go on and on. When I get this sorted I will have a great motor again. |

Title: Re: work this one out!! :@ speedo not working... Post by Geoff_W on Jan 14th, 2007, 1:14am Thanks Martin, I realise that this is not Parts Wanted section but I really do need to track down a loom or get the autoelectricians to try to repair the existing one :-/ so if you have the loom that runs from cruise control to ABS multiplug back to the bulkhead under the servo then apparently across to the glove box ?? on a 96 12valve I am interested. Stuart and Barry have both been checking out possibilities for me but no joy so far. Geoff |
