window washer will not work. moter runs but not pumping out. how do you get to the pump

the pump is fitted directly into the reservoir and is accessed by removing the front bumper or by getting down under the front of the car and accessinmg it that way. The pipes do get blocked on occasion; usually with deposits from additives etc. Try disconnecting the pipes behind the bumper and blow through with a pump or airline. You could do the same from the pipes behind the jets under the bonnet. Be careful of the wires for the heating elements on the bonnet jets though; they are a little fragile

Was the jets on mine, clogged after I had it refilled during a service at my FMD...

Slightly off topic, how do you remove the jets from the bonnet? I can normally do this sort of thing but these foxed me.

I pulled the bonnet insulation and the hoses but the thoughts of broken washers at Ford prices seemed too much of a risk ::)

this happened to me, I thought they weren't working and took it to my local garage, he suspected washer pump. I left him to it, he called me 10 minutes after saying it was working fine. ??? When I went back he showed me that you have to press the button down for a while (about 15-20 seconds) then it started to squirt. It only takes that much time if you haven't used it for a while, then it gets shorter afterwards.
I couldn't believe it. ::)

I'd say its worth a try! ;D

hi there

the bit you fill it up with is just the neck of the bottle. the pump is directly below by about 10 inches. easier to get at it from underneath.

isnt there a one way valve somewhere to stop the water running back?

Very interesting question, which I asked myself since I have the car. I could not find an answer, neither in the pdf-manuals nor in the forum. My problem, and probably the problem of bigfrank too. Even with headlamps off, it takes two or three two-seconds attempts to spray. With headlamps on, i.e. if the jets for the lamps are activated in addition, it takes up to five "stop and go" attempts until water hits the windscreen, whereas already at the first attempt you can see at nighttime that the lamps are washed immediately. From my very old Fords I know that there were check valves with a spring and a small bullit inside in the pipes before each jet. I have not seen something similar in my Ultima. Maybe one should add such.

By the way. I think when I do not use the "stop and go method", and constantly press the button, I guess I will not have water on the screen either.

The Granada certainly had them. They were located in the pipe, close to the bonnet hinge and the pipe looked quite similar to black TV coax.

The valve case was made of two soft nylon /plastic parts with a SS spring and a rubber diaphram. The later used to swell and jam itself open, allowing the water to flow back down. The two halves can be pulled apart and the edge of the diaphram rubbed down with a bit of fine sand paper to make it work again.

thanks you all for your help i fix the washer this weekend it had thick blue gunk blokcing the filter got wet but washers are working ok now ;D ;D

Frank, This is sometimes caused by adding other substances,ie Washing up Liquid, to the washer bottle. It reacts with the 'proper' screenfluid and causes just such a 'gunge'.
