I'm fairly new here and do not know much about mechanical problems.

Anyone having this problem? It seems the engine gets very hot in the front right side (melted parts of the insulation on thick red wire until I wrapped aluminum foil around) after some hours of driving, especially when driving in the mountains.
Temp gauge shows no problem but otherwise seems to funtion well (heats steadily from 0 after start-up).

Also I recently got a loud roaring from the back which is most noticable below around 55-65mph and dissapears at faster speeds.

Any suggestions.

Do you have any photos of the damage or the area of the damage? It sometimes help identify what is causing issues.

As for the rear noise, could be worth getting rear bearings checked

Is the sound a kind of rumbling ? is it could be the differential, or it's oil level gone down a bit.

rumbling would probably describe the sound well.
Where would I check the differential oil level, I'm not really sure what it is. Same as automatic transmission fluid?

I'll try to see if I can get some photos soon of the hot area (forgot to mention that I'm not from the UK so I have left side steering. I'm wondering if it could be from the exhaust pipe where it joins the engine?

Hi. I'm confused about the melted thick red wire. You say you've wrapped it in foil but alas, if the insulation has melted, is this wise?

Posting a photo is the best thing ;)

Rear ruumble could be the diff, surely wheel bearings would get worse and worse as speed increases. Could also be a propshaft bearing.

The oil level in the differential can be checked on it's only plug that it haves. If you look under the car from the boot side you'll see the differential has many bolts all around and one in the middle, the oil level should be right at the plug level. You need to add Hypoid Gear Oil, automatic transmission it's not good for it. My Scorpio had a rumbling noise when i was accelerating at exactly the same speed, using the 5'th gear. After the change of the differential oil now all it's back to normal. I was also missing about 0.2-0.3 liter of oil.

The red wire is not melted all the way through to the the metal, hence aluminum foil is now protecting from further heat damage.

The plastic smell seems to be caused by coolant escaping the overflow and then dripping onto the hot engine parts.

The rumbling noise was finally fixed. It came from the weel bearing as suggested by Baz.
A couple of other mechanics were convinced it was the differential but nope!
Car is now amazingly silent with no indication of differential rumble at all.
