Hi,

So, the MOT station had a quick look around the car and pointed out the battery tray needed doing (said otherwise car looked ok). They didnt charge me, said to get it fixed first.

I quail at the thought of the labour/price to strip the dash and weld in a new panel to do the job properly. Plus i need the car back on the road sharpish.

So, ahem, bodge time, can i cut out a good battery tray from another car, and "fit" it inside my rotten one, then secure with some bolts. Or does it have to be welded in to pass an MOT?

Longer term, i will be looking to get the rotten metal out and do the job properly, but that is more of a summer job with my brother who can weld (but is 300 miles away and will need persuading) and a spare car to replace any broken fittings.

Anyone got any top tips?

Tintin, I'm no expert on MOT matters but surely the test is to see that the battery is secure in its mounting,which frankly is no more than common sense. Can you not get a sheet of metal cut to size with the edges turned up sufficiently to pop rivet it to the 'good metal'?. Dont forget the bulkhead in front of the battery is removeable so any fixing to that needs to be capable of removal ie: self tappers. :)

yep, might as well use a "base" from a scrapper, that way you get all the mountings/brackets needed to clamp down the battery, and pop rivet it in. i was just wondering if anyone had done it and if anyone knew for sure if it was an MOT pass that way

probably dont need fixing at the front, if the corners/sides are attached securely.....

the guy shook the battery and it nearly ended up in the glovebox so not secure. ;D

Sam, had a look, Think i can cut one out another car and bolt it in

Battery security is not part of a car (class 4) MOT test, but holes / weakness within 300mm of any prescribed area (mounting) is, so a hole in or around battery tray may be within 300mm of strut mtg, therefore repairs have to be welded.
