Title: Creaking Boot Lid
Post by Mike_Floutier on Feb 14th, 2007, 10:31am
Sounds really silly I know but the rubber seal on my boot creaks again the boot lid with the slightest movement of the car.

I've tried putting a bit of grease on it which stops it for a few minutes (which at least confirms that it is the seal) but it soon comes back - presumably the grease is absorbed.

Has anyone had this problem and does anyone know how to stop it - my customers often ask questions when we go over sleeping policemen etc.

Thanks

Mike

Mike, if there is movement then something is not secured sufficiently. Have a read of THIS page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/closuresmanl.htm) and scroll down to the section re. the boot. My bet would be the striker plate which probably wants a minor adjustment to increase the tension on the lid.Are the hinge bolts are secure?. This article (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/tailgate.htm) on the Estate may help. Same principle and adding tape in the first place would save adjusting and would probably prove the point.

Man, how simple, why didn't I think of that! Doh!

Thanks Simmo.

Ok, a bit of follow-up on this - slightly funny but should be useful.

I had suffered this creaking noise for years and following Simmo's excellent advice I tightened the boot lock striker plate and hey presto the noise completely stopped.

What I didn't realise was that the initial looseness of the boot lid had been cause by me stuffing TOO much luggage in the boot and slamming it shut. I have to do this a lot as a pro. driver.

So guess what? a couple of days after fixing a 3 year old problem I re-introduced it and this time (of course) there was no further adjustment possible at the lock end of the boot.

So, what I did was:

1. Undid the two bolts attaching the boot lid to the left hand hinge.

2. Closed boot and got my wife to sit on the boot, above said hinge.

3. Clambering into boot, through back seats, and tightened said bolts.

4. Repeat on other side and hey presto!

Tools required:

1. Wife; approx weight 9 stone,
2. 3 Months diet to get into boot.

lol

Mike

Ps No more big luggage!!

Mike. Glad you got the problem sorted. If you have been adjusting the hinges just be sure that the offside one is not 'fouling' the loom as this is a known cause of electrical problems. If the hinge touches the loom it will eventually cause a wire or several to fracture inside the loom wrapping. Just be sure it is secured out of the way of the hinge throughout its travel. May have to clamber in the boot again!!.  :D
