:'(I was reading a newly added item from a member about problems with his gearbox. I clicked on the link soneone has added and read about the clolour of the auto gearbox oil. On checking min its not the nice red colour the artical said it should be, but, it smells fine and as far as i know the gearbox works fine, altho the car is a little slow on acceloration. The car is a 2.9 12v V6 scorp which has done 116000 miles. Can anyone tell me do i have anything to worry about or am i panicking for nothing. Please help :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Dogma, don't worry mate if the box is working fine :)

Just get the fluid and filters changed soon...the problem with any old oil or hydraulic fluid is that it loses its lubricant properties over time and the innards of the gearbox proceed to grind each other to death :-*

Bruce i could kiss ya mate, just had another look, the oil seems thin and on the light brown colour, smells a bit like like garlic or minerals lol. Is it hard to change the filters and fluid.

I had mine done at a garage, cost me £50 for the labour, and I bought the parts separately for about the same again IIRC.

As had been said, if the box is working fine then don't worry. However, if the box is working fine then a fluid and filter change should keep it working fine 8)

Blimey mate, i need your mechanic. I just spent over an hour trying to buy a filter and new seals. Every place i called said it was a dealer only part so, i called fords. The filter is a wopping 36 pounds :oand the new seals which is cheaper to buy as a kit is a 32 pound :o ???. The oil, dextron 11 is the cheap bit at 13 pound for 5 litres. At this rate my familly havent eaten for 2 months, the dog is dead and i look like a tramp, this car better be worth it ha ha :D :D :D :D :D

I'm afraid you'll have to eat the kids :-/

5 ltrs of ATF won't even wet the sides never mind fill the torque convertor.

No-one said owning a Scorpio would be cheap !!

Kids have gone mate, the dog had them, the misses has gone, yipee ha ha 8). No seriously i know ill need up to 8 liters if it has the cooler, the car is worth it so i dont really mind. Just a shame the previous owner couldnt look after it a bit better. Thanks for all your advice tho.

i had a scare when i checked my gear box oil took the dipstick out and it looked black :'( it was'nt till i wiped it on a rag that i saw it was a nice pink colour. i have now painted the bottom of the dipstick white to prevent a heart attack on next inspection

ps dogma when was your car made? i'm sure i read somewhere that they changed the oil frem dextron 11 to dextron 111 on the later models, may be wrong but sure i read it somewhere. wether or not it makes a lot of difference i dont know. no doubt someone will know.

Hi mate, the car is a p reg so im sure it was 1996 production. If the oil type was changed was it a differant colour or still the red. Just waiting for pay day as all the parts needed i,e filter, oils and seals come to around 110 pound. If anyone wins the lottery can i be your friend ha ha

cant find the actual link but according to the gear box specs in the manual the reccomended oil changed from cars built from august 96

HMMM thats interesting mate, ill stop by the fords center near me and see if they know, just wondering if the oil was a differant colour

Try HERE (http://www.fordpartsuk.com)for your bits they do a good service and are a LOT cheaper that your regular FMD, and delivered to your door.

Bloody hell, just got my responce, oil filter is a 3rd of the price of fords, not sure about wish bones, they work out to 90 pounds each which does seem a little high, and thats not with all the rubber O rings, willlook around for them i think, thanks again Snoopy
