Title: Smoke on starting
Post by proberjohn on Mar 12th, 2007, 8:08pm
Every now and again (but not often) my 2.3 smokes heavily on starting and then clears up.  Any ideas??  EGR stuck open??

Regards

John B.

If  the  smoke  is  grey/blue in  colour  it   looks  like a  well worn  engine.

Does  it  go through  a  fair  bit  of  oil  ?

Not sure of the engine layout on the 2.3, but maybe a leaking cam cover gasket allows a bit of oil to leak onto the plugs which is then burnt off when you start up.

It doesn't use any oil to speak of (a pint every 6,000 miles perhaps) and it only does the smokeing trick every couple of months!!

Yesterday it didn't smoke on the first start (to move the car on the drive) but did on the 2nd start (to put it back).

hi john

take no. 1 sparkplug out and have a look at it. that's where i have a very small leak (even after a new gasket, both of them).

if your plugs work their selves lose (as they have a habit of doing), then it might let a drop of oil in at start up, then seal up again as it gets hotter. :-/
