Ello again folks.

Slightly Concered about this ...

Took the water tank cap off today and the cap had some light brown sludge on it, which i understand is boiled oil mixed with water :o

Anyway, on closer inspection, looking inside the reservoir, it has alot of oil (black) sitting.

The previous owner told me that he did replace the cylendar head as it had blown before, so could this be why there is still oil in the radiator reservoir or is it a sign that somethings wrong ?

The car runs fine (bar my low idle speed) and doesnt overheat at all, I've looked in the oil reservoir and there is no water in there.

If you're not losing coolant, and everything is running OK, then hopefully this could be just the remnants of the last person's 'change of cylinder head' problem. Could have just been too busy to complete the job! ::)

My advice would be to go down to your accessory shop, and get some coolant system flushing liquid, and give your cooling system a Birthday.

Slik is very good. I've used this stuff, and it really shifts crud.

Remember when you re-fill, after flushing the system, to add the appropriate amount of anti-freeze to the system. This is required all year round, as it not only protects in cold weather, but also lubricates, and prevents formation of rust and gunge in the system.

Hopefully, you've just got a lot of left over oily deposits in the coolant. A good flush will clean it all out for you. :)

oil in water due to h/gasket is very rare, most h/gasket problems come from combustion gasses entering the coolant jacket, what engine type / gear box have you, nasty one is the g/box oil in the coolant, it will look black / brown and will only be small amount, but if its the auto box cooler leaking it means that coolant will also be getting into the auto box, even small quantities will cause havoc. engine oil cooler / heat exchanger is another one to check.

My engine is the DOHC 2.0, gearbox is Automatic.
Now you got me worried as the oil in the water is very dark and doesnt look to be a huge ammount really.

I do have problems with the car for example sitting at traffic lights in drive with my foot on the break, the car bobs up and down like its trying to engage drive even though the revs are really low.
I usually drop it into Neutral whilst waiting for the lights, then back into drive to set off , is this related?
Like i said before though, everything else is fine with the car, no problems accelerating driving etc.

I'd have the head checked. My 2.0 16V died due to a cracked head. A sure sign of this is the loss of oil. Have you checked the level lately?

My 24 V did exactly the same...it was the IACV which was full of dirt

if the car is not overheating it is unlikely to be head gasket, however i would be suspicious where the previous owner got the head from if he never had it skimmed it may be slightly warped.

I sympathise - I have a 2.3. This morning the heater blew cold and the temp needle stayed welded to the bottom stop. On (v. carefully) removing the coolant filler a jet of brown emulsion issued forth....... and the sump level was two pints down..... B****r ! As someone else said - probable cracked head as compressions are fine, and 60 psi oil will displace 15 psi water. Is this common ??

hi what is your tickover like is it constant or does it go up and down when in park or neutral, if it moves it could be a dirty maf, good luck david

Thanks for all suggestions folks, i havnt corrected this as of yet, didnt get the chance this weekend O_o

I'm gonna clean the MAF and IACV probs next weekend, see if it corrects my idle probs.

Idle normally isnt stable but its not that noticable really, its only when its in Drive of Reverse it bobs the car about.
A fella i know has an OBD II handheld thingi and when he connected it he said there were no fault reports but the idle speed is too low, he's gonna adjust it for me when he gets the chance.

NO! DON'T TOUCH THE IDLE. IT'S FACTORY SET. give everything a good clean first, including the sparkplugs.

Andrew beat me to it!!. ??? The setting screw is 'crimped' to stop any alteration. If the idle is 'out' then it indicates a fault elsewhere particularly with the items you have mentioned or an air leak.

I wasnt going to do it mechanically, he was going to adjust it via the ODB II device thing .... still a no no ?

My plan was to clean out the MAF and IACV first off to make sure it isnt those thats causing the probs.

hi there

don't think you can using a 'normal' obd-2 scanner. maybe with the ford fsd2000/wds m/c, but i'm not sure.

do the cleaning/checking first.

the maf is one of those things that really does weird things to the car including making gears clonk, not only that but the car will run rough, if after cleaning it is not any better try another one, i nearly cr****d my self when i thought i was going to have my gearbox rebuilt again,good luck
