Title: Rear bumper paint
Post by wbph on Mar 18th, 2007, 2:52pm
I seem to notice that the colour on the rear bumper of the panther black Scorpios seems to turn all manky and horrible.

Any way of restoring the true color as mine is getting quite bad, its turning grey.

I was going to give it a blast with an aerosol but don't feel confident that this is the right answer. My wife tried to help (!) by using some bumper paint off her Citroen which didn't quite do the trick. It took a while to get it all off as well and hasn't helped matters.

I would ask around the local spray shops for a quote, take the bumper off and prep it yourself and ask them to spray it for you. ;)Roy.

Would it be a case of the laquer having gone dull or worn off ?.....you could try a laquer touch up stick on a bit of it & see if it brings back the colour  :)

I got aerosols for my own car from this site. Very pleased, and it did a good job on both bumpers.

Secret is in the preparation, and making sure that the temperature is not too low which leads to clouding, and poor finish. A suitably heated garage is quite adequate.

Sounds like lacquer to me, before you go the expensive route, try some fine cutting paste on it. Got the last lot of paint for my Scorp from the local Ford dealer. Not cheap but great finish and really tough. True what SD said about it clouding if you spray it in the cold but it does often come out with careful compounding ;)

If you can salvage the colourcoat, you can sand it with fine wet and dry and just re-lacquer :).

Regards, Bruce.

Thanks for the advice but I think the colour has gone too far off for anything but a complete repaint. I take it the basic colour is still Panther Black but withouit the shiny lacquer finish.

Ash black I believe, Panther is a shade darker ;)

You might still be able to salvage it, colourcoat will go off it it gets exposed to the elements...needs sanding and re lacquering ;)
