Hi

I have a 95 24v Cosworth

Was 40 miles into a 70 mile trip yesterday and floored it to overtake on an A road when the car started stuttering, missfiring (I think) and stalled. Managed to pull back in and oh look there's a lay-by so pulled over into that.

Saw a wisp of steam/white smoke from out of the front grille as my heart sank!

Looked under the bonnet and couldn't see anything odd. Checked water,oil and transmission fluids and seemed ok. The water was slightly low but colour seemed ok.

Decided to see if car would restart - which it did. So I reversed back down the lay-by and tried driving forwards. It moved off ok a little shakey but seemed to settle down. Tried it again and things seemed ok so decided to make a run for home.

Pulled off ok but noticed that the rad warning light had come on :-( so drove about 5 miles to the nearest garage (keeping an eye on the temp) and topped up with water - maybe just less than a pint but I'm surprised that it was that much when I could see some in the header tank the first time I checked.

Anyway drove home the last 25 odd miles and everything seemed fine, although I didn't rant it. Near to my house is a fast straight so I decided to kick it down and see what happened. It kicked down and sped off fine but the rad warning light came back on straight away.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this - A simple fix or time to cry???

Hi mate, im having exactly the same problem, only differance is mine runs ok till i have to stop for a junction, then as i pull off the car feels as if its not firing or flooding, i have to put my foot rite down for it to take off too, i was loosing water, the ammount the whole header tank going in around three days, finally found the leak which is just under where the thermostat housing is, which i have just changed so obviously didnt seal it properly. have a good look for water leaks srtaight after giving it a run as the water evaporates very quickly due to the heat, out of interest is your autobox acting weird, thumping into gear or anything else out of the norm

Hi Dogma thanks for the reply

Seems like my water loss is linked only to heavy acceleration so I'm fearful something is gearbox related, fingers crossed eh? unless it was just a coincidence and I have sprung a leak - but that wouldn't explain the first problem :-(

My car used to run like a pig when it was cold and it got to the point where it would only change out of first gear if you put your foot to the floor and missfired like crazy. The idle was rough as well. So I cleaned out the MAS and IACV disconnected the battery to reset the variables and it was like having a new car. No missfires and gear changes as slick as you like, if you've not tried that then be prepared to amaze yourself.

Hi mate, yep did that only a week ago after fitting a new throttle position sencor. Its like the car runs ok one day, they bad the next, seems funny that it runs reasonably ok in cold dampish weather but not well when its dry and reasonably warm. The way its going ill be selling it off cheap

Faulty MAS maybe? That's my last best guess, I'm afraid I'm no mechanic :-(

whats a MAS mate, do you mean the mass air flow on the air inlet, i have a V6 and they dont have them if thats what you mean

The 2.9 V6 with 24 Valves (Cosworth) has a MAF and it's crucial for gear changes and has A4LDE completely electronic g/box

The 2.9 V6 with 12 Valves with distributor (Cologne) doesn't have a MAF and has an A4LD gearbox which is vacuum operated

My tuppence worth ;)

You are losing water from somewhere - you need to find out where it is leaking from. It doesn't have to lose a massive amount to put the water light on.

Just say it is coming from the top hose/ECU temp sender area, there are a electrical plugs and connection round there that would not like a dosing of coolant.

I had a leak in that area on my 96 24v and it didn't appreciate it :)

I think my leak may be in the same area as yours.

I have a leak from behind the main top hose somewhere. I suppose it could just be the smaller hose behind either perished or with a loose connection. The rate of discharge is definitely speed related.

Where your symptoms the same and how did you resolve it?

Anyone else have any suggestions

Hi mate, i just fixed a leak on my scorp, it was coming from the thermostat housing just at the bottom, due its location i couldnt find it at first and i was loosing a whole resovwor (sorry about the spelling) in under 4 days. Due to the amount of time waiting for a gasget i cleaned up both serfaces and used a high temp locktight gasget gel to reseal, its worked fine evr since. Also when it started getting low on water it also run like a pig, im guessing its something to do with the temp sensor
