Title: wiper linkage
Post by ferretmobile on Mar 20th, 2007, 9:27am
Driving into work this morning, pelting down with snow and wot not when the wiper linkage gave up the ghost.
I dont want to resort to giving the car to Fords (again)
So guys, how easy is it to fix or should I give in and let my local ford dealer fettle it?
BTW I have fixed a tempoary fix with cable ties for the moment.
Ferret :(

Thanks Pete, helpful info that. However I think that the prices quoted have gone up a tad since that pulication.
Fords want to charge me £198 supply and fit. This includes the wiper motor as stated on the link. A lot of dosh...again :(.....but as its flipping cold out there and I dont have a garage, I am rather tempted :(

hi there

STOP!!! :o

you just go into ford and buy the short arm for a mk3 granada. it takes about 15 mins max to change over. you just take the old one off and pop the new one on. nothing to strip down or anything.

costs about £12 now a days.

Thanks Andrew :D I will do that! I can probably buy one through motor factors who supply the M.V. dept at the college where I work. I feel a bit more cheery now.

Hi guys, wot a champion lot you are. With the advise that Andrew gave me, I e-mailed ford parts uk and when I got home tonight, I checked my inbox and to my delight FPUK have quoted me £7.06 for the short arm and £6.86 for the long arm. I had quoted the finnis numbers found here and explained that the Mk3 granada was indeed the same linkage in every respect.
The chap at FPUK concurred with this. The order was placed this evening and should be with me in two days.
One question guys, one end is worn and hanging off, but how do you get the other end off? or is this a dumb question ???
Anything wood related is no problem for me......but metal, hmmmmm :-/
Regarding the teaching of the yoof, I smoke too much, drink too much and am the willing sex object of any dominatrix.........................wot can I say }{ }{
Cheers ferret

It just pulls off with a little effort. they are only a "push fit"  . They are ball and cups . the ball part is metal and the cup is a hard rubber compound. a pair of good grips will push the new one on if you are unable to do it by hand pressure.

Hope Snoopy's post relates to the wiper problem and not ferretmobiles last sentence }{

Sorry guys :-[ ;D

Hi guys, while I was waiting for my wiper linkage from FPUK, a mate of mine who is a motor vehicles mechanic gave me a great tip. Now I have tried the cable tie temp fix with some success but I have found that you cannot rely on it lasting.
My M.V. mate said to get a piece of plastic bread wrapper and put it over the popped out ball. Press home and thats it! The thin plastic takes up the worn slack and the linkage works perfectly. This is such a good tip that If members keep a section of bread wrapper in their glove box for that eventual wiper failure, they will be back on the road in minutes.
Hope this helps........Ferret :)

CRUMBS! They don't call your mate "Warburton" do they?

;D

No seriously, it sounds like a good idea and certainly will help save a bit of "bread" for a while....

Hey! That sounds pretty slick! 8)
But for those of us dirty foreigners who wear berets and carry bare baguettes home snucked under our sweaty arms ;) : what is it you wrap your bread into ????
Cheers,

any thin plastic will do...........mine has been on and working for the last two days and works great. I actually used two thin layers of bread wrap.
Mike, a section of a carrier bag will do, depends on the thickness.

Too thin.....and they are made from latex  :D
Bread wrapper is a form of nylonic plastic and is just the job ;). I drove into work this morning in the rain with wipers going on pulse with no problems at all.  ;D

Have just recieved long arm and short arm from FPUK and have fitted the bits into place, Easy to do and working a treat. ;D
A big thank you to scorpio man for his advise.
Regarding the use of G-clamps, I couldent use mine as they were a mite too big so I used a mole wrench to pop the arms into place.
The bread wrapper trick certainly got me out of a spot and I would recomend it to members as an emergency fix that stays fixed for as long as you want it. If it wears out, just replace with new wrapper ;)

Something like this happened to me going up the motorway one friday night. The cup on the drivers side came off. I crawled to the services and asked an AA man for help. He put it back on and simply squeezed it together with a pair of mole grips. That was 2 years ago. My Dad has the car now but doesn`t use it much but the wipers still work fine. Needless to say though i joined the AA there and then!
