Title: White Smoke! Post by old_Ern on Mar 30th, 2007, 10:11pm Hiya Dude's, I'm a new guy on the block. I've been working on my new ford scorpio 96' DOHC 16v since way before christmas. The head gasket blew, so i dived in and saved it from the scrapyard. I could have it for nothing if i fixed it. I know next to nothing about engines but with the help of this website (and a mate) WE DID IT! 8) I even somehow filled the batteryside fuse box with water ??? That again i fixed with major help from THIS site. :-* I haven't taken it for the 5mile drive(no tax)yet. But i did drive it up to the main road and back... {} and there it was 'white smoke' coming out of the exhaust. I'm praying it's water in the exhaust box from the head gasket blowing before, if so i shall drill a small hole in the exhaust box and be ready with a small screw. But what do you guys think, has the gasket gone again? :-/ M.O.T. is due this Monday! :o Ern... P.s. The smoke smells bad, like plastic. Coolant maybe? |

Title: Re: White Smoke! Post by v4-max on Mar 30th, 2007, 10:30pm may not be a problem mine smokes for about ten minutes till the engine warms up then stops. check the expansion tank to see if there is any oil mixed with it, allso take out the dip stick to see if there is any contamination. leave it ticking over for awhile [stay with the car dont wonder off for a cup of tea] in case it overheats the trouble with head gaskets blowing is the head can overheat and warp it. only cure for that is to have it skimmed or new head. good luck. |

Title: Re: White Smoke! Post by shaun on Mar 30th, 2007, 10:34pm i would say water and oil in the exhaust,(cat) you need to run it a bit more to find out more, did you have the head skimmed? did you fit new strech bolts on the head, ?i hope it is wat i said ,and good look but it sounds the same as mine once i re did my car with the white smoke,,tho,,, ;) |

Title: Re: White Smoke! Post by petehull on Mar 31st, 2007, 9:46am Find a steep hill, face it upwards and runn the engine for a good while at high revs, it will clear out any water... Just a suggestion,,, ::) Pete |

Title: Re: White Smoke! Post by scorpio_man on Mar 31st, 2007, 11:48am hi there about 30k miles for the ford platinum ones. been told they can go 'off' very quickly... one minute working fine, the next nothing! hth |

Title: Re: White Smoke! Post by v4-max on Mar 31st, 2007, 12:16pm accordingt to my records, the plugs were last changed on 18/06/05 at 47,583mls.car is currently at 52,861 so should be ok.although i also note they were also changed at 43, 454 on the previous service.4,000 miles? either the garage was a bit over cautious or rip off merchants. so i think i will change them any way. |

Title: Re: White Smoke! Post by tintin on Mar 31st, 2007, 12:26pm the garage diagnosed by pulling the plug leads off one by one, with the engine running (and rubber-handled pliers i assume), one of the leads made no difference when pulled. hth |

I've been over to the car today and given it a good run, parked it on a hill and ran it at high revs. The smoke is not as bad as it was. Didn't drill a hole in the exhaust box. Now all i can do is wait for the mot, results on monday. Once again thanks a lot for your help. old Ern. ps. i'll let you know if it passes. ;) |

Title: Re: White Smoke! Post by taliban on Mar 31st, 2007, 9:32pm the only slight concern i'd have is you checked the head visually, it really should've been checked with a gauge for warpage, i dont know what the tolerance limit is, but its normally quite small. |
