Title: coil pack failure Post by ferretmobile on Apr 2nd, 2007, 9:50pm Hear we go again guys :( Another flipping problem. I jumped into the moneypit that I laughingly call my car... Turned on the ignition and the engine sounded like it was running on three, in fact it was two >:( I managed to make it to a truck stop and phoned the RAC, in the vain hope that a plug had failed.....one and a half hours later the RAC man turned up and announced that it was a coil pack failure. He couldent get me a new one but he could tow me to a mate of his,a few miles away who had a secondhand coilpack that may or maynot work but once he towed me there he would divorce himself of any further procedings. OR...I could wait for the chap with the low loader who could be at least two hours away. I still had fifty miles to go on my journey and the thought of being stranded with an unknown bloke in the back of god knows where did not inspire me at all. I opted for the lo-lo, and within 10 minutes of first chap dissipearing, the lo-lo turned up and took me & the memsahib and scorp the 50 miles home. Second chap wsa a stirling bloke and I gave him a drink for his efforts. I have ordered the coil packs tonight from FPUK along with a set of platinum plugs. So question is what are the pitfalls of installing in the coil packs and what size plug spanner do I need for the plugs. I am certainly going to e-mail the RAC about first man and the odd deal ??? I will also mention that man no2 was a diamond geezer. Credit where due and all of that. Man no1 for all I know might have been trying to help out but I dont want to end up as a corpse in the river :( Back to the money pit :-[ I believe that you need some kind of torx jobby to remove the coils and that they are fragile. Any advice would be helpful. Ferret :( |

Title: Re: coil pack failure Post by Spannerdemon on Apr 2nd, 2007, 11:36pm I've never used the RAC since a day way way back when I broke down on my motorcycle (failed oil pump), on the M6, and the control room told me that "We're too busy with cars to come out to a motorcycle"!! I'm now too busy to bother with service like that. I use GEM HERE (http://www.motoringassist.com) who are, and always have been the best recovery and breakdown service anyone could ever wish for. 100% excellent. :) |

Title: Re: coil pack failure Post by Simmo on Apr 3rd, 2007, 7:56am Ferret, the details are HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/engines/dohc2_3/2300CylHead.pdf). Go to page 5. The cover is held on by 10 bolts. The coil packs are held,as you say, by Torx screws and I think the plug socket is 16mm. They are deep down so an extension is required. Once the top cover is off check the state of the electrical wiring to the coil packs. This area is well known for problems caused by heat breaking down the insulation to the actual wiring. Check and handle the connectors with care. The actual coil packs are robust as is the wiring to the adjacent plug. Good luck, Mike. |

Title: Re: coil pack failure Post by julie_quaife on Apr 3rd, 2007, 2:27pm my car started playing up in mcdonalds drivethrough in penzance last monday, just got back from camborne dropping one of the kids at college with all her drama props and thought i would buy the youngest son a breakfast as promised. scorp had been fine lately but i had noticed a slight hesitancy? on a couple of occasions previous. i pulled up to order and when i selected drive and let the handbrake off the car started to shake badly and backfired a couple of times, i pulled up in the carpark and phoned hubby as my mobile battery was low- ruddy typical!! and as the car is the only one running at present in the family and home being six miles away had to call out the rac. after 45mins doug turned up checked scorp out and declared the front coil pack needed replacing, he followed me home, made it in the end ordered new coil pack from mills, came in three hours later and car was up and running by 3pm. what a difference!! apparently car was only running on two beforehand. i have had no problems with the rac down this part of the country they have all been lovely blokes. cost with discount £70 for part. i will get other pack replaced as a precaution soon just in case!! |

Title: Re: coil pack failure Post by ferretmobile on Apr 3rd, 2007, 2:43pm Well done Julie, strange but my front coil pack was the one to pack up. Maybe this is a common fault on scorps. I have to say I had a coil pack go on me about two years ago. I let fords do the repair then...will try and do these simple jobs myself these days and save a fortune. Glad to hear you are up and running again ;) Ferret |
