Hi Guys suggestions please.

The car is a 2.3 auto with 97000 on the clock, saloon.

The problem is just of late when at a stop the car has a tendency to develop kangeroo symptons its as if it wants to take off, the condition is worsening as time goes on, I have always left the car in D when at a stop if I remove from D symptons immediately vanish, there is no problem when the car is in motion but I am concerned that the gearbox may be on its way out, having just spent a fair amount of money repairing sills and wheel arches this would come as a body blow.

Transmission Fluid level is fine and so is colour, although not ideal but it has always been like this since owning the car (5 Years) MAF is clean and apart from this the car is running as sweet as a nut I understand that one of the suggestions may be to take the selector out of D when at stop but this would not be normal practice and quite obvious there is a fault which needs to be corrected if possible.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions that can help with this problem.

Hi The engine revs fluctuate.

hi there

more than likely is the idle by pass valve. take it off and clean with carb cleaner. work the 'ram' a bit with a screwdriver (gently) and give it a couple of drops 3 in 1 oil (or engine oil).

btw, if you plan on keeping the car, a gearbox oil/filter change wouldn't go amiss.

Hi thanks for the info i will give it a whirl but could you tell me is this the valve that is in front of the oil dipstick tube that has a multi plug on top and is it also known as the Idle Speed Control Valve.

see how you get on with it. sometimes takes a couple of cleans to work, or not at all. then it's a new one time.

Many thanks for your contribution on this and although I have removed and done what you suggested the problem is still there you could liken the symptons to some one who is having a bout of sporradic hiccups, so what I will do is source another valve before I go on another route cause and again thanks for your advice, your a star.

hi there

did you have a look at the loom to the spark plugs? or the spark plugs. they can work lose and makes the running a wee bit suspect.

H I yes a new loom was fitted a couple of years ago, coil packs look ok and i have recently serviced the car including replacement of platinum spark plugs I may make Harwood but things are a little difficult at the moment but anyway once again many thanks.

Hi sorry to be a pain, but I should like to hear if there are any more suggestions on sourcing the cause of this problem, first of all let me recap, the car is a 2.3 petrol saloon, auto with 97000 on the clock and runs as sweet as a nut in all drives when in motion but at a stop stage but still in D or any other drive position the car has a tendency to lurch (Erratic Hiccuping), as soon as it is motion the symptons disappear, my fear is the G/box, things I have checked Wiring loom is only 2 year old and I cannot see any fault with it,Coil packs show no evidence of tracking,Spark plugs have been recently changed (Platinum) and have always been platinum since owning the car I have the car booked in for diagnosis this coming Monday but it is money I can ill afford, having recently spent 800 on body and paint restoration and a few other things,when I explained symptons to garage there immediate thoughts was of air inclusion? I know this is a shot in the dark but one or two of you may have come across this problem in your time.

Transmission Fluid is in fair condition and correct level, MAF is clean, sorry I forgot to mention this in previous post

hi kb

try taking the small vavc line of the egr valve. plug it with a small screw. see if thing improve.

i'm still pointing to the idle valve. sometimes cleaning doesn't work. only a new one will do. but! check for any air leaks around it. you can use wd40 with a straw for this. if idle note varies, this it's leaking.

btw, don't use a lot of wd40. makes a hell of a mess. ;)

oh, does the engine jump around when this is happening? or just rev up and down?

Hi The engine feels as though its jumping around, sometimes in very short spurts other times a second or two longer.

Sounds like an OBD scan would not go amiss here! Doesn't sound like a "usual" gearbox fault IMHO.

EDIT: Might be worth having a look at the plugs (I know they are rcent replacments, but still) to check condition and correct gap.

it sound like it might not be firing on all cylinders. :-/

did you take all the leads off the coilpacks? we had recently a member with dirty connections to the other sparkplugs. he cleaned these and tightened the 'clips' a wee bit. seems to have made a difference.

Hi I have examined spark plugs and ignition coil packs, Plugs look ok but on close examination of coil packs i noted hair line cracks in the area where the holes for the securing bolts are located wether this is a factor I realy do not know but I will try and source two more replacements I disconnected the Vac tube from the egr and secured with screw as suggested but this had no affect, so anyway that route is illiminated what I tried once more is to remove the I.s.c.v. and cleaned with carb cleaner and then finally applied a little wd40 although I had tried this before but this time there this a marked improvement and fingers crossed a replacement valve with solve the problem.
