Title: Removing headlamp glass?
Post by dannynic on Apr 12th, 2007, 7:24pm
Have just removed my headlamp outer surround and I can't seem to separate the the glass from the black plastic that it seems to be bonded to. Any one got any ideas? Is the glass avalible from ford separately does anyone know? Thanks for your help and looking at my query.

yes it is,cant remember exactly how much, but it was in the region of about £30.00 per side,fordparts.co.uk sorted mine for me (this was the price for the later facelift "tinted" ones BTW)

Has anyone tried separating the glass from the backplate by using the hot oven method?

I want to tint the inner surround like the facelift model and have seen other forums mentioning melting the glue around the glass by putting them in the oven for about 10 minutes. Apparently you can then warm them back up afterwards and re-use the original glue.

Sounds feesable but what temperature before melting the plastic surround, would be an idea to experiment on an old surround if you have a broken lens glass.

Why not try a hairdryer or a hot air gun on the low setting ?.

Not sure where you have read that but it is more of a silicone based product not a glue based one, Putting it in the oven would just melt the plastic.
I have done the  facelift mod a few times now and can give you details if you want them ;)

I'd like to know how please.

Mainly how to break the seal and what product to use to seal it up again.

I saw the oven method described for an early Mistubishi with glass lamps but that used some kind of glue that looked like chewing gum.

Thanks for any info on this one.
Once I get this done I'll be on the lookout for a black facelift bumper  8)

hi there

there's not a lot to it. have a look at this. (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/headglass.htm)

i personally remover the complete headlight (3 bolts). the 3rd one is accessed from the foglight hole in the bumper.

Unfortunately this link only tells you how to take the headlight apart. It's a very good guide but skips over the hard bit.

What it doesn't tell you is that the piece you paint black is sandwiched between the backing section and the front glass. The glass is glued to the backing section so you cannot remove the chromed inner without first opening up the light.

I did my fogs, took them apart to re-silver the bezels. the fogs have a flange around them which I milled off with a  Dremel - gently, gradually prised the glass lens off, cutting the sealant with a scalpel as I went. There was a thread about it back in September or October, I think my pics are still on there ;).

To seal them back up, either black or clear glazing grade silicone sealant ;)

Regards, Bruce.
