My A/C isn't as cold as I'd like it to be - it does work and it does drop the vent temps noticeably, but certainly not down to the levels I'd expect (though with the current weather I'm glad it does work in any capacity).

The inverted 'U' pipe between the expansion valve and the compressor is icy cold where it exits the valve - my understanding is that this should actually be warm because of the heat absorbed by the evaporator? If this is the case then is it likely to be a duff valve and what are the chances of a 2nd hand one being bad too? Or how much is a new one?

My engine is the diesel, not that that should make any difference.

It doesn't just need topping up does it? Mine was under-performing on the cooling front and that's all it needed.

It's been regassed twice in the last year (the second time they found it had a leaking seal on the drier).

Mine was warm the other day after disconnecting my AC panel.

I done a reset of the panel and it was back to normal.

Just had mine done, the pressure switch was faulty. When I got it back after three days (garages seem to know how to fill them up but they don't understand how they work, cost me anothe £124)
It wasn't all that cool 6deg so I was faffing with the reset which didn't seem to be working right, kept getting code 7. Anyway I lost patience so I thought I'd leave it for a while. After doing a drive of about 12 miles though it seemed a bit cooler so I left it overnight.
the next day I did the reset again and guess what.... It worked, all the whirring and clicking happened, and it ended up giving -1deg at the centre vents.

Not sure why but can only guess that it is something to do with the ecu learning phase... someone may know better...

I've now found that the exit pipe from the receiver is much colder than the entry pipe - this would suggest a restriction which is dropping the outlet pressure and allowing it to absorb heat - obviously at lower than normal pressure going into the expansion valve (and having already absorbed some heat), it appears that this may be the cause of it all. The guy who did my re-gas also sells receivers on ebay for about £40 each so I'll save up and have a new one fitted and (yet another) re-gas...
