Title: 2 problems a little help needed
Post by bootiful-scorpios on Apr 17th, 2007, 12:02am
today coming home in scorp noticed a very weird noise,
so had a listen once got home,

prob 1, reving engine up seem ok take foot off a  kinda metal rattling noise as revs drop
i belive it could be a cat prob?
held a hammer against the casing of the cat and i could feel a vibration coming up the handle of it,
could any one tell me if im right in thinking cat?

prob 2, a rather loud air leak, sound like its coming from under the cosworth cover  i remember reading a post somewhere about a t piece under there?

both must have happened at the same time  :(

Hi

Prob 1. With the engine switched of {ex cold} bang on the cat either use yr hand or a rubber hammer. If the cat has broken up you will here it rattling. May be the bolts/bracket has came loose. ;)

Prob 2.  Remove engine cover look at vac pipes to see if anything has come adrift or chaffed through, then start the engine, listen for air leaking.  Hopefully its an easy fix ;)

hi there

if the cat has blocked the exhaust, it cvan blow the 2 egr pipes off, hence the noise. not sure where they are on the 24v, but the other end (the transducer) in on the bulkhead, so follow them down from there.

got the old man to stick his head under car today and he said it is def the near side cat that is rattling  :(

the egr pipes still seem to be connected .. :(

is it wise not to drive car till i can find a cat? it sounded horrid today when had another listen.

would it be wise to try and get hold of both cats? or just replace the bad 1?

hi there

a scan would show if the other cat was iffy. plus it would show up any fueling issues, etc.

re driving it. it should be ok for a short while. if the cat brick breaks up, it cat block the exhaust, which isn't fun (ask tintin about his)!

yep, thats where i got them from. they are not exactly a pattern fit tho....  ;D so prepare for a fight

but cheap ;)

Post by bootiful-scorpios on Apr 19th, 2007, 8:02pm
tintin is  the cat good once youve had the fight?

no ive noticed that the prices are way cheaper than other places did yours take long to come down?

dose this mean i need to buy a lambda sensor too?
if so which one would fit our scorp ? :-/ and are the ones from cats direct  ok?

Title: Re: 2 problems a little help needed
Post by tintin on Apr 19th, 2007, 8:37pm
Hi,

Didnt fit them myself, but the garage werent smiling when i came back, already agreed fixed price  ;D MOT straight after fitting, passed emissions almost perfect.

I knew i had one post cat lambda out, and precat was sluggish, so i bought two new ones asked them to fit them precat, and swap the two working older ones post-cat. unfortunately, they wouldnt fit them, only the ones they supplied, so i have a couple of brand new ones cheap if you need  ;)

was it a nation wide branch that you got to fit yours?

thats what ive been doing today and yesterday ringing round different branches of exhaust places in hopes that some where may have one and then i can get it fitted , f1 dont even have our scorps listed as a cat car on there list!
he said he will try and find out more on that and kept asking me what year is the car !

yep i may need to buy them of you i will let you know ..

Title: Re: 2 problems a little help needed
Post by tintin on Apr 19th, 2007, 8:53pm
nah, a local garage, the most respected garage in Edinburgh wouldnt touch the job unless bought proper cats, but put me onto this guy. only had to go back once to that one !!! my best experience with a garage so far  ;D

be aware, many places will only fit parts they supply, so if you are going down the cheap/ second hand route, find a garage first  ;)

pm sent

yeah feeling desprate now lol, just want to sort it some how its funny how you soon realise how lovely these cars are again when you start driving something different and it make you also realise the worth of the extra petrol burning up   }{ well worth every penny!!

hi there

it's a shame you're not closer to glasgow. i'd get them fitted for £20-£30 a side at one of the places i use sometimes. :(

hi there

my car is cat-less, but i've got a cat in the shed to go back on. the de cat cost £130, but that was when cats were crazy prices.

you would need to remove both cats as they would be out of balance, one bank with, one without.

i'd get both cats done, if it was me. easier in the long run. :)

Post by bootiful-scorpios on Apr 19th, 2007, 9:54pm
thats what i was told that both would have to come out i did wonder y now i know lol, said that would be about 80 quid to do that,
do they run better with out the cats?   do you get a tiny bit more bhp?

Title: Re: 2 problems a little help needed
Post by scorpio_man on Apr 19th, 2007, 10:21pm
hi there

yes, a wee bit more power (+20). ;) ;D

£80, that one new cat nearly fitted. :-/

for £80, it sounds like all they're going to do is knock the cat inners out. mines is a s/steel straight through pipe.

i'd still go for the new cats option.

Title: Re: 2 problems a little help needed
Post by bootiful-scorpios on Apr 19th, 2007, 10:53pm
oh right, yeah it would be to just take them out,

and yeah its prob more hasslel than its worth in the long run like when it comes round to the next mot, but i was just thinking as a quick fix , but perhaps he would  fit cats  if i can get hold of some, its just im geting a bit comfuse with the sensors in the exhaust is it best to get new ones as well..

Title: Re: 2 problems a little help needed

hi there

no, you only need to replace them if they're faulty. a scan would show that, but you can check with a meter set to 2 volts.

a quick update ,
the loud hissing noise is coming from the t-piece under the throttle body it looks like it have snaped in half so i will need to try and find one somewhere.

as for the cat, f1 tyre centre £165.00 fitted  which is much more exceptable than fmd s qoute of £450. fitted so that will be done next week  :D

a bad scorpio day  :'(      hubby took scorp to f1 this morning and time he got there the cat had stoped making its rattle they checked it over and said nothing was wrong with the cat ! time he got home it was rattling again he took it to ats who comfirmed it is the cat,  and that they can replace it on thursday,

on his way home from ats he noticed that the hissing on the vac  pipes had got way worse he looked underneath and the main t- piece had compley broken , and so had the small t-piece,  so completley stumped now dont know how to sort it out!

or where to get  t-pieces?

Didn't someone suggest garden centres for the T pieces recently??. If the sizes match up the sort of thing used for 'drip-watering' systems may do the job.

[]

or a plumbing centre. :-/

Title: Re: 2 problems a little help needed
Post by bootiful-scorpios on Apr 24th, 2007, 6:38pm
:D :D :D :D ;D
main t-piece was a calor gas t-piece with some new hose to fit the t-piece

found a small t-piece and and a inline reducing piece connector ( what was ment to be for lawn mower spares) and the original ford pipes fitted stright on to it, :D
started scorp up and no hissing air leak so seems like job done.
so ready to have cat fitted on thursday .
