Hi all, seem to have a issue with my autobox on my cossie. It started happening yesterday. First it seemed like the gearbox was losing its gears and the revs would fly up, now its thumps slightly as it changes gear (But not all the time).

I have checked the AMT fluid and looks normal, no leaks and a nice redish colour. After I had a problem with the gearbox yesterday I did disconnect 1 of the lamba sensors (The one that connects under the Air filter box) and it seemed to run without dropping any gears but still got the thumping when changing gears.
And also I cleaned the MAF sensor about a month ago

Any ideas

Revs 'flying up' and thumpy gear changes are usually associated with either the Idle Control Valve or the TPS (Throttle position sensor) problems.

Check round the ICV for air leaks, but if it's the original unit it might benefit from a good internal clean. They get all gummed up inside, and cause problems.

Someone with a Cossie will probably give you more help here. ;)

Hi Dan. 2 thoughts, VSS (again) and gearbox loom damage. Any instrument lights or flicking speedo? Any other faults?

Cheers Guys, I have noticed something else, not sure if this may help with my fault.
1) Fuel usage is much higher, and the car seems to run much faster.
2) If I am driving along the motorway and take my foot off the throttle to slow down, the car jumps a little (only noticeable because I know I have a issue)

Had exactly the same problems when my TPS was on the way out.
It was as though I had given the throttle a little touch (which I hadn't), and the engine wanted to run on its own.
A new TPS is around £45, and also needs a new gasket. The Ford gasket is about £9.00 but you can make one up for about 10p with some gasket paper.

I would suspect the TPS. As was pointed out to me at the time. these cars are all about 10/12 years old, and the TPS won't last forever. :)

It certainly won't do it any harm, but the fact that it had a new battery will mean that you effectively disconnected the electrics anyway. Can't hurt to check it again though. ;)

Hi Danny,
when you got a scan - did you get a reading for the TPS (should be around 16%)

With the slight thump when releasing the throttle - I get this sometimes (ie rarely) - I think it depends on the revs you're doing at time but I haven't paid a lot of attention to it (my autobox is still behaving beautifully & TPS =16.5%).

Might be worth getting a (another?) scan if the previous suggestions don't work out.

Hi Paul, thanks for the suggestion. I might just do that, but I am going to try and disconnect the battery first. I remember when I first fitted the new battery, the car would start then the car would just conk out.

Crikey mate, a test with a multimeter would have been ok...it's only like a carbon volume pot after all. It will be somewhere on the throttle body, near where the throttle cable connects. Normally a little black case with a plug with 3 wires connected, any more about the cossie is a mystery to me I'm afraid :-/.

WOW. That's an expensive TPS.

Not for the first time am I glad that I took the advice to buy the 12v 2.9.

Not quite as fast I admit, but rock-solid reliable, and at over 120mph, it will do me ;)

yeah its a bit expensive, this is why I need to know where the TPS is. In case they are giving me the wrong part, I don't want to pay for something that is not the TPS.

As per the above page, 2nd picture down. A little black box that is attached to the drivers side of the throttle body. If you take the Cosworth cover off, it is there to see, held on by 2 screws and has 1 electrical connection.

Easily removed with an offset screwdriver I have found :)

Right my problem is solved. After a screw up at fords >:( (ordered the wrong part) I decided to remove the TPS but before I got to the TPS I noticed the MAF sensor was not connected properly . So plugged it in, disconnected the battery for 30 seconds and hey presto it works again :)
