Cars. It's just one thing after another isn't it?

Right, the latest trick, is that my front wheels are dirty. In fact, they've been noticeably dirtier than the rear ones for over a year. I get the car cleaned and a few days later the front wheels look dirty again, even if it's baking hot and dry outside.

I'd noticed it but never gave it much thought, until I had cause to get up close to the wheels for another reason, and noticed that the 'dirt' seems to be a thin film of dirty oil. There seems to be no leak, at least not one I can see, from anywhere under the engine or gearbox, so I've no idea where this oil might be coming from, or indeed how it might be getting onto the outside of the alloys.

I'm stumped. Anyone else ever come across a similar problem?

Are you sure this isn't just the usual brake dust from the pads?. Most cars suffer from it and the fronts are allways the worse.

Well that's what I always thought, but it just seems so oily, rather than dusty. Might be nothing, but just thought I'd check with the scorpiology community. ;)

I dare say Simmo would clean them for you if you asked nicely ;D ::)

Fronts will always get dirty quicker than rears, are you sure you aren't just picking up grease from the road?

Just brake dust from the front pads.

It IS greasy stuff unfortunately ;)

Funny, I was going to post about people’s experience with Ferodo pads.
I tend to be fairly light on brakes, but my rear wheels have been getting covered in dust very quickly, the pads only lasted about 8000 miles. They were Ferodo from a reputable local shop, but I rather wonder if they were fakes.
I’ve just changed them for Apec ones. Probably not done enough miles yet to be certain, but there’s no noticeable dust at the moment.

I've used Apec discs & pads before & have found that the discs (front) seem to warp quite soon after fitting, & the pads don't last more than 10,000 miles :)

That's probably why Kwik Fit & Formula One use them.....they're budget brakes ::)

Personally...I wouldn't recommend Apec, because I don't think they are heavy duty enough to cater for the weight of the Scorp ;)

I've got a set of mintex pads on the front of the Jag (fitted by PO) and believe me, they bind like hell when cold, won't ever be touching Mintex again after that :(

Akebono ceramic pads seem to get a lot of mentions, not sure if you can get them for the Scorpio?

I found the brakes on my 2.3 fine but then I had them all serviced with new seals and fluid. Before you go aftermarket, give the brakes a service and see how they are after :).

i replaced all four discs and pads with unipart stuff, brakes are now actually better than ford OE fitted .
