Title: Substantial lack of power 2.9 efi
Post by transittony on May 30th, 2007, 3:16pm
Hello everyone...I'm Tony and I have put a 2.9 engine in my Transit and added an LPG system. Trouble is, when I  tried to switch over to LPG the engine died so I switched back to petrol, at which time there was a loud backfire. After that the power has diminished to the point I need 2nd gear to get up any kind of hill and there is a small amount of vibration too.  Any ideas, anyone?  I have tried compression tests on 3 cylinders all at around 150lbs/sq.in as I thought it might be the chain jumped a tooth.....but it seems not.  Additionally, there seems to be a huge amount of 'oil' in the sump -it registers about 2in higher up the dipstick than it should...! Any advice would be gratefully received. Cheers!

:(

Awww dont be that hard play nice..... ;D

I can see where he's coming from if he's used a Scorpio engine..... :)

Anyhow, Tony, when LPG systems backfire they usually b****r the Airflow meter's or blow pipes off, I wouldn't mind betting thats what it's done.  ;)

Regards Dave

Obvious question is. Are you sure that it's ALL oil?  I would suggest it's not, because there's only one way to put oil into the engine, and that's through the oil filler cap. If it's suddenly leapt in level, then you've certainly got water in it, and with the symptoms you've described, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you have blown your head gasket big time.... or worse! Holed pistons, bent valves, block damage all spring to mind  :o

What I should have added (although it's painfully obvious), is this.

You say you're still driving it.  :o  :o  :o

If so, you are making any damage worse.

If you run it in this state, with water in the lubrication system, you are heading for a new engine. Personally I'd get it off the road immediately. Believe me, if it seizes, and it will with water in it, it will be terminal.  ;)
