Title: Re: steering clunk Post by sector-9 on Jun 10th, 2007, 6:48pm Mine does this too, very light clunk from around the top of the column. Didn't fail MOT last year though and it's been doing it since I bought it so I'll live with it until something breaks or it becomes obvious what the cause is. As you say, no play in the steering wheel so I don't think it's the top bush, however if I grab the wheel at ten past eight and pull one towards me and push the other away, I can often reproduce the noise... Title: Re: steering clunk Post by pedropedro on Jul 19th, 2007, 10:17pm Ive just discovered hop to stop the clunk when i turn the wheel. If i pull very hard on the wheel towards me i can feel resistance of a spring and there is some sideways movement. Once released, the clunking noise goes . maybe description not very good but i need to know what is wrong with the steering . it is a definite clunk at around two o clock and 10 o clock can feel it in the wiper stalk area why pulling on the wheel hard towards me cures the problem for 2-3 weeks ?? any clever guys out there who understand the steering mechanism who could advise the above is whilst stationary although of course it does whilst moving as well tks john |

Title: Re: steering clunk Post by petehull on Jul 19th, 2007, 10:30pm Sounds to me like it could be a bit of wear maybe on the steering lock. if I remember rightly (and I'll check on my old one tommorow) there is a metel tooth which slots into the steering mechanism when the key is removed, hence the locking action, I think it could be worn enough to just catch.... Does it do it on each full turn of the wheel? pete |

Title: Re: steering clunk Post by pedropedro on Jul 19th, 2007, 10:55pm yes on every turn of the wheel when i pull really hard on wheel then problem clears...i am sure i have felt the clunk through the ignition lock area.. i wonder what is happening when i pull the wheel hard towards me..? maybe makes some subtle change in the area where the lock pin goes in thanks for feedback appreciated.. i wonder how it can be fixed |
