Title: Nasty rattle, loss of power, smoke! Post by BrianT on Jul 5th, 2007, 4:07pm My other half just phoned to say she's broken down in Sheffield. Apparently the car was running normally, when it suddenly developed a rattling noise from the enngine area, which rapidly grew, over less than a minute, becoming "embarrassingly loud". She likened it to an old-fashioned football rattle or 'spokey-dokey', the things you used to put in your bike spokes as a kid to make a rattly clicky noise. The development of the noise was accompanied by a growing drop-off in power, to the point where she was unable to get the car up a moderate hill. She says there was some smoke visible around the engine after stopping, but no signs of fire. She's left the car where it stopped. I'm still at work but thought I'd see if anyone has an inkling what it might be, before I go look at it. ??? It's not too far from our local garage so hopefully they can tow it up and have a look. Sounds pricey though. :-[ |

Title: Re: Nasty rattle, loss of power, smoke! Post by petehull on Jul 5th, 2007, 4:35pm Could be the drivebelt broken, bits clacking against the aircon pipes, I heard it on mine before the head gasket went, smoke and then in my case loads of steam. Hope it's not a big problem... best of luck pete |

Title: Re: Nasty rattle, loss of power, smoke! Post by BrianT on Jul 5th, 2007, 6:46pm Well, I'm off down to check it out now. Hoping it's the cat element that's broken. Apparently the noise started quiet and got louder, not like a broken camshaft or whatever, which would go from nothing to BANG! straight away, I think. And it's a rattle, not a banging or knocking. Whatever, we'll see. I'll try and coax it up the hill and park it outside the garage for them to look at. |

Title: Re: Nasty rattle, loss of power, smoke! Post by BrianT on Jul 5th, 2007, 7:22pm Well, it started, though after a couple of goes. There was a sort of dull light rattly noise but that disappeared after a few secs and it sounded OK, but when I put it into D it just cut out. Tried again, same result. Started it again and put it into 2nd and it drove OK. Drove it about 1km and slipped it into D once it seemed to be driving OK. No apparent problem and nothing indicating on the dash. Hopefully not terminal then. Gearbox or cat perhaps? Taking it to the garage on Saturday, see what they can find. Still welcome any advice anyone might have. |

Title: Re: Nasty rattle, loss of power, smoke! Post by BrianT on Jul 10th, 2007, 4:43pm Found a big water leak under the engine. Not sure where from. The local garage have it at the moment. Asked other half what the temp gauge was showing when it conked out. "Where's the temperature gauge?" was the bewildered reply. Doh! |

Title: Re: Nasty rattle, loss of power, smoke! Post by BrianT on Jul 21st, 2007, 5:32pm Local garage got to the bottom of it.... water pump badly corroded and was flowing freely the coolant out of the bleed hole, so basically the engine had nothing to cool it down! It also needed a new radiator and the auto transmission fluid cooler pipes were leaking (they cut the dodgy sections out and replaced with pressure tubing, jubileed on). Bill was £500, but at least it'll be OK for a while now... :-/ |

Title: Re: Nasty rattle, loss of power, smoke! Post by BrianT on Jul 31st, 2007, 12:56pm One legacy of this that I've noticed is that sometimes when I start it now, there's a sort of vibration, as though the engine is wobbling slightly on its mountings. It didn't do that before the overheating/colant loss. No noise, just this oscillation, as if i'm sat on a washing machine on spin. Also, despite the overheating, the temperature gauge reguistetred normal, ie exactly in the midpoint (finally managed to get her indoors to realise where the TG was). |
