Hi all, just bought a 2.3 scorp estate as my 2.9 has sadly or will be going to scorp heaven lol. Car goes well but every now and then for a few days it does the following after sitting all day/night -starts but immediatly cuts out, then will not start at all, turns over for a good 20 secs then finally starts. Sometimes dies again but most times then runs fine after. Always starts again when hot, no running problems other wise, just this. Want to find the problem as i dont fancy paying out for a starter motor lol
any advice would be great

Sounds fuel related....fuel rail pressure regulator ?

Hi Jonnycab, i have a spare fpr but from a 2.9, any idea if its the same one

No, different FPR's I'm affraid :)

Thinking, that if it is fuel related, then I'd be more tempted to check out the fuel pump relay first of all....it's the big green/purple-top one in the battery side fuse box.

Pull it out & clean the contacts to see if it makes a difference. If not, then give the relay a few taps & see if the car starts then......If it does start after tapping the relay, then it may have a bad contact internally.....might be an idea to nip down the breakers & get another one ;)

Just a thought, have you checked the spark plugs? I could be flooding the plugs if its cutting out and taking 20+ secs to start again. Otherwise I would agree it may be the FPR

May be an idea to remove the idle control valve & give it a clean internally with carb cleaner as well....this can cut the engine out at idle if not working properly ;)

When I now hear of any intermittenbt starting / cutting out problems relating to 2.3's my first thoughts have to be EDIS related. Not necessarily the unit itself but certainly check the wiring and the wiring from the EDIS to the ECU.

During my recent problems the Idle control valve was replaced as was the Fuel Pressure Regulator and the relay (which is relaY 17) - The problem was eventually diagnostically diagosed as a wiring fault fro the EDIS to the ECU (the black and white wire which controls the voltage to the pump. instead of a constant 12 volts the suspect wire would only deliver as little as 3 volts and the pump immediarely stopped, as it is designed to do.

If it runs quite lumpy before it stalls, it could be excess air getting in.

FPR seems likely, mine had a cold start issue at one point, would take 2-3 turns of the key to get going. (Known good, used) FPR solved it. Also had an occasional cold 'hunt' which cleared after I cleaned the idle valve just before I sold it.

Does sound fuel related, otherwise it'd stink of fuel when you kept trying to crank it. But check the electrics, Alastair's been there, listen to his advice :)

Ha ha after the luck ive had this week ill buy a mountain bike next lol, strange as when its left over night it starts first time but immediately cuts out, it did it today and i left it about 20 secs, tried again and it started fine. Ill try the starter relay from my 2.9 before she goes on wed, will be such a shame to see it go tho, the car is in such good condition

Hi all, well the car is now running fine. I did the following- I swapped the green/purple relay from my donar scorp. I also replaced the old plugs, strange thing is that they were covered in oil, so my guess is the rocker cover gasket has or is going, so ill need a new one of them, happy the car is running great agin
