Hi all, yet again the marvel of the scorpio has struck, firstly it had problems starting, tne it blew a hole in the housing above the thermostat and needed a completly new inlet manifold, guess what, during fitting the manifold i found that a lot of wires aound the throttle housing were bare with no plastic at all, after about 2 hours witha role of insulating tape, i put it back together, and guess what, it wont start at all, all lighting come on as usual and it turns over but the temp gauge is reading well over boiling and its cold
Please please can anyone help keep my sanity, first guess is there are still wires touching, hence stopping it starting

The temp guage reading high when it's cold sounds as though the two wires are indeed touching each other....& there may be other wires touching as well from the way you described it.

Also if the wires have been bare for a while then they will have corroded (did they look green ?) & lost their conductivety, so that could well be causing the starting/running problems you're having ;)

If alot of the loom appears damaged then it may be a better idea to get hold of another one. I'm sure Spikies will have a few kicking about the place ;)

I have fully rebuild my cossie loom, i was amazed that the car worked. A lot of wires lost their insulation and where touching. The same thing happens to my 2.3. which is heavily wrapped in tape. When I'll have time, I'll take it out and rebuild it.

Later edit: if the temp gauge shows maximum then it indicates that his wiring is in short circuit.

The easy way to permanantly "reinsulate" the engine loom ( in my opinion ) is to cut ONE WIRE AT A TIME 4"- 6" from the plugs on the O/S inner wing slide "heat shrink tubing which is available 1 Mt.lengths or on a 50Mt roll " down the wire until it meets the plug / connector at the end,shrink it, slide on another piece 10"long,solder the wire back togther,cover with the heat shrink tube,shrink it and the insulatation is restored. It takes a couple of days to do but works. Then tape the loom back together an protect it with a flexable protective sleeving as Ford did and its then safe and secure ....Kimi....

[] []Hi, ive dont some rewiring before, to be honest most of the wires are underthe black sleeving and are still in good condition, i will replace to wires that are bad and see how it goes. Mant thanks for your help tho to all

I too thought the wires under the black sheathing were in good /ok condition..... When I removed ALL the black sheathing it was just as bad mast of the insulation just crumbled away !....Kimi....

Heat shrink is available from a good motor factors for as little as £1.50 for a five pack of 12" lengths :)

When i did my cossie loom i got heat shrink from an electronic components shop. I also have changed all the wires, and dismantled the silicone insulation from every multi plug, heat shrink it internally, the put the silicone plug back. In this way the loom doesn't have any week points. Also when you solder the wire back, it's best to first make a small knot on the wires. Because solder is becomes dry, or a cold weld is made can brake of and lose continuity.

A good source of wiring and the heat shrink is Vehicle Wiring Products. Tel . 0115 93054554 or do a Google search for their catalogue. A number of people on here have used them and their service is excellent. The connectors in their catalogue which look similar to our are NOT compatible (power timer housings). If you have a branch of Maplins near you they also do heat shrink etc.

I'm having the exact same problem with mine, it must be a common fault!! I had to buy a skanky little metro so I can get to work, when I get time I will be replacing the hole loom, wire by wire :'( I rang Ford to see if they do new looms for this, but they dont. They did tell me however that if they did it would cost a whopping £2000. Good luck :-* Andy

Hi mate, had a car electrician around today, after some tests he found that the crank postion sensor was totally gone, ill replacr that but he said the amplifier thats just behind the driver side headlamp may also have gone, but cant test it until the latter is replaced. My loom was ok apart from the area around the throttle housing which isnt too bad. Will relace the cps and let you know the result
