Title: fans runing all the time Post by the_machine on Jul 28th, 2007, 2:54pm Hi Guys Cossie fans on all time. both on. they come on about ten seconds after engine is running. but only when engine running. not the air con compressor switch, tried disconnecting that they still run. anyone know which relay runs the fans? 2 relays? both fans are on, even when i switch off air con and even when engine cold. a shorted realy? anyone know where the wiring diagram is so i can trace the route back to source? does the car have more than one coolant temperature sensor? i.e a sensor just for the temp gauge , then a more sensitive sensor for the engine management? perhaps the sensor is dead or bad wiring, i noticed some bad wires on the engine compartment engine loom, do you reckon a wire is short or open circuit giving false reading to ecu? any tips help / diagrams / ideas greatly appreciated pete |

Title: Re: fans runing all the time Post by petehull on Jul 28th, 2007, 11:09pm My fans were running all the time, since I have replaced aircon compressor, reciever drier and pressure switch they are not running all the time and the aircon is working brilliantly, is your aircon gassed enough/ too much? Pete ps I know mine is a 2.3 but I think the aircon is similar to yours.... I could be wrong.. |

Title: Re: fans runing all the time Post by davem on Jul 31st, 2007, 8:07pm Check http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/coolfans.htm for cooling fan operation. They are twin speed fans and will be on all the time on low speed if the aircon is on. I know these fans very well...replaced 2 now...I would worry when they dont spin at all. On all the time? Lucky you ----Ignore it :-) but if it bothers you...check the above link for full details of how the fans work. The previous member is correct...its a large green relay behind the driver's side headlamp. In fact, the green cover is removeable and inside you will find 3 relays...2 small and one slightly larger. You can safely operate these by hand by just squeezing the contacts together to test the fans individually, Note: In normal operation both fans always work together at the same speed....either off, low speed or high speed together. In other words, they run together as a matched pair...not individually...but to test them individually..... From memory, with the engine and ignition off...squeeze one of the smaller relays..one fan will operate at low speed. Squeeze the other smaller relay, the other fan will operate at low speed. Squeeze the larger relay and a smaller one together and one fan will run at high speed. The other small relay in conjuction with the larger relay will operate the other fan at high speed. Squeeze all 3 relays together. you should get both fans at high speed. Hope that helps. Dave |

Title: Re: fans runing all the time Post by WAYNE on Aug 1st, 2007, 7:24am Hi guys, My fans were running all the time at start up,turned out to be the wiring to the engine coolant temp sensor, the larger one above the water pump.check that the insulation around the wires hasnt perrished or split and that bare wires arent touching together because this will cause both fans to run at high speed all the time. Regards Wayne |
