Title: Re: crank postion sensor Post by Kjetil S on Jul 29th, 2007, 2:29pm Yes it will. If the CPS doesn't work, the ECU won't know when to fire the ignition. |

Title: Re: crank postion sensor Post by TiberiuS on Jul 29th, 2007, 10:29pm The crank sensor is like a coil of wire, should put out a pulse related to engine speed (normally a few hundred hz at idle). Without it the engine will crank but not fire...it should also set a trouble code. If it's dead, check the connector and the loom which leads up to it first, check the connector is making good contact. Sounds unlikely that the (EDIS?) is also faulty, more faults of the bad loom maybe? :-/ |

Title: Re: crank postion sensor Post by TiberiuS on Jul 30th, 2007, 4:31pm I presume the amplifier you talk about is the EDIS module? :-/ EDIS is the thing which fires the coils, a bit like the old ignition amplifiers...I've no idea where it is on the Scorpio though. The coils should always be getting a 12v feed (negative switched as I remember), might be worth checking there's voltage at the coil connectors before you suspect anything else. You can unplug the crank sensor and check it with a multimeter, should be a thousand ohms or something, as long as you get an ohm reading (not a short or open circuit) it should be ok. Hope this helps. |

Title: Re: crank postion sensor Post by dogma on Jul 30th, 2007, 4:41pm Thanks mate, the electricain tested both. the coils were fine but nothing from the CPS at all, probably why the car wasnt starting properly last week, got one on order and will fir tomorow, will see what happens then lol jim |

Title: Re: crank postion sensor Post by TiberiuS on Jul 30th, 2007, 5:19pm Jim, I could stick a scope on the sensor and see if it's really dead, could also do you an OBD scan and get some live data. But not sure when I'll be down your way next, might not be for 2 or 3 weeks :-/ Dead crank sensor would give a no-start issue, hoping it is just that :) If I can help, just let me know :) |

Title: Re: crank postion sensor Post by dogma on Jul 31st, 2007, 10:41pm Hi mate, many thanks for your offer. Today i replaced the sensor and still wouldnt start. I replaced majority of the wiring from the box above the injectors to basicall everything that runs from that, the car now starts but immediately cuts out, starts now without any hesitation but cuts out streight away. If i give it a bit of trotlle it will run but coughs and missfires from the engine area but cuts out as soon as the throttle is taked off. Ive tried another idle valve from the inlet manifold i fitted recently but makes no difference. if the inlet manifold was not air tight could this affect the cars idle and the popping sounds jim |
