Hi all, having blown up the engine in my '95 Cossie (problems with a lead foot ;) ), I've since bought a '96 Cossie, problem is the key (it only came with one black key (boo!)) is very worn, the '95 came with a full set of keys (2x black, 1x red), is it possible to change the ignition lock from one vehicle to the other? Do I have to get the red key reprogrammed for the new vehicle?

Also, curiously enough, I reprogrammed the remote from '95 to '96 but now I find the remote locks and unlocks both cars (quite interesting at times ;) ), any-one know why that is? I was under the assumption that the remote would only operate on one vehicle at a time...

Finally, complete enclosure from the remote, it doesn't work (is it supposed to?), I can use total enclosure by using the key in the lock, but not by remote (annoying...because I am lazy... ;) )...any clues, tips and hints would be greatly appreciated... :)

Global closing only works on the key NOT on the remote.
Changing the lock is really quite easy as shown on this page HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/ignitionlock.htm) but I think you will still need the other key nearby unless you go to the expense of having the system reprogrammed .

change the ignition barrel, pull the metal part out of the new key and glue it into the plastic fob of the old key, sorted ;)

This will still only give you one key that will actually start the car though

So basically I would have to have the old red key reprogrammed to the new car? Is that a FoMoCo job? Is it expensive?

Stuart, can't you just change the locking mechanism without changeing the electrical parts to the ignition lock, I have one off the car at home so I'll investigate further when I get the chance to dig the it out. As far as I remember the switch is fastened onto the back of the switch mech so, so long s the keys are still ok they should work with the new lock on the existing switch?

Yep its just the ignition barrel itself you change which will of course need the "new key" and the plastic fob from the "old" key to be present so the PATS will think its the original key

Can you not rebuild the lock using tumblers from the old lock, or spares from other locks or maybe even buying replacements from fmd, I did one on my wifes old Escort?

Yep that can be done there is a lock rebuild kit although its cheaper to do it with the parts you have rather than buy new parts

Presumably the lock wafers were upgraded at some time.
There are 2 types of no 4 wafers, you need the one on the left which came with a kit (it was an Escort kit but I assume the Scorpio kit is the same).
The reason is the one with the shorter cutaway assists the key in turning the lock whereas with the one on the right it is only the tip of the key that turns the lock which wears into the soft alloy which means the wafers no longer line up properly.

When my ignition lock got difficult to turn, all I did was swap the no 4 wafers.

Just to clarify, I don't want to repair the lock, but to change the complete mechanism from one car to the other, I'm also intending to do that with all the door locks, the mechanisms in the '95 are nice and tight (the car was barely used) whereas the '96 mechanisms are so sloppy I could open them with a screwdriver. Also it would give me a complete set of keys as opposed to just the one...

You would need the keys reprogrammed then by Ford or anyone else that does it (or bypass your PATS system which will invalidate your insurance in the event of theft, makes it "easy" to steal the car but costs nothing) :)

Or you could cut the old not to be used key off at the stem and just tape the old transponder chunk of the key to the new key and Hey Presto one programmed key!
