A few weeks back box started not liking 2nd, so off with the box (know your all thinking Maf, But thats only 3 months old)
striped it down and sure enough the center servo piston had shot it, fitted new bands and bolted it back on the car,,.
NO different , still no 2nd, swapped the box again, rewired the maf earth, (found it not good) tried two other mafs off good cars , checked and double checked the loom to the box, all seems ok.
The thing is Disconnect the maf and yes it's all ok, connect it, it idles fine, pull away in 1st ok and then the revs rise to about 3.5k then it either thumps into gear and immediately changes to 3rd or misses 2nd completely. disconnect maf all smooth and fine,just abit thumpy
Now also down to 12mpg, No codes!!

Any Ideas anyone ??? ???

Have you had a look a the wiring in the engine bay?

Pay particular attention to the 2 large connectors on the drivers side inner wing and the loom running between the V of the heads.

Always worth checking that you have the battery cover in place? Also make sure the drain holes are clear.

Hi, you could be onto something, checked the loom today and found its in poor condition in the V around the injectors, tps, idle valve and cam position sensor, insulation cracked and alot of bare wire. so its off with the loom for some repairs.
Thort i was safe from loom faults having a late 98 car but no, still crap ford wiring. >:(

I had trouble in this area due to a coolant leak from the pipe that runs up between the heads. The car was bought like this so by the time I came along it had probably been leaking for a while. The leak was sorted but a few months later the wiring, insulation having been attacked by the anti-freeze, caused a lot of problems :(

Not got a water leak have you ::)

Glad to say no leaks, think it's just age and heat.
still not that easy to get the loom off and just to make things worse i've busted one of the injectors when removing it from the rail, was due to send them off to be cleaned.
looks like the car could be off the road for some time. :(
