Grandad. Go to THIS page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/CosV6manual.htm) and look at 'Specifications'. You will see that all other models are listed in the links on the left of the page. When your oil was changed was a genuine or good quality filter used. If they do not have a 'non return valve' this can cause the oil to drain down and thus take longer to reach the vital parts.

Any ideas where you can buy these filters - you sound spot on Simmo with this!

Q: How do you put these hyperlinks in the reply to a posting  ???

Actually just about every filter I know of has a non return valve, it is part of a oil filters construction usally.

However some work better than others.

I have just ordered a new one from my local Ford man -£5.31 + VAT

I am going to put 4.00 lts of good oil  and 0.5 ltr of this lucas oil - I have nothing to lose and all to gain after 178K miles on the clock.

I will report back when the freezing temperatures arrive ::) ...tomorrow! lol

hi there

have you tried starting using WOT method? http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1195255128

make sure it works first using a warm engine.

is it any better? do you still get a noise with a warm engine?

Well, I would certainly suggest an immediate change if you don't know how long its been in there and what grade/type it is.

To be honest, a 1 second rattle in cold weather is something that could quite probably be cured by using a good oil and genuine Ford filter.

Have a search around the forums but IIRC I have read good things about Castrol oils.

Fully synthetic is recommended for the 24v's, but there are caveats.

For example, a fully synthetic oil will clean an engine out. If an engine has had infrequent oil changes and is a bit dirty inside, switching to fully synthetic may make it leak as it dislodges deposits around gaskets. It could even loosen deposits so they shift to oilways and cause blockages  :-X

My 24v was a case in point so I use a good Castrol oil, but a semi synthetic brew, and change it regularly.

Comma oil is also meant to be very good, 5w30 IIRC.
