Wow just been throught this (see my posts)  Is the stick very smooth to move? if so I would look underneath at the linkage, several weak points, check all the clips are holding the lingage together/on pivot points.  There are two rods and a crank, the crnak ism ounted on a bracket that sometime fractures or in my case the bottom rod which is a ball joint had seized causing the bracket bottom to snap.  repalced with new crnak and all well.  If it is this it can be done without removing anything  Just!!!

Rob's is an auto, is your diesel an auto?
There were only a few made and they are quite rare.

If its a manual then you should be able to dismantle it from inside the car and find the problem easily enough

HI highlander we have looked under the car, which is manual
The flat quite substantial forging has broken we are not quite shore how you come in from the top basically how do take the gear stick and gaiter out and access the problem

If you remove the trim around the gear stick you should be able to locate the fixing/holding mechanism . I have not actuallt seen the manual version and there is nothing in the Workshop manual to tell us how to do it.
Basically you are having to look at the remote gear changing linkage ... which stays in the car when the gear box is removed.

As to the large flat forging that has broken is it possible to post a picture .. it tells a thousand words.

Have a look at THIS (paras18 & 19) (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/manualtrans/MT75TDi.pdf) and see if it explains it a little more... the whole of the workshop manual for the MT75 gearbox is HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/mantrans.htm)

Hi my engineer came back from Cornwall we had to lower the transmission to get access to the gear linkage, which was broken right at the end the goes into the gearbox,
Had to be welded with a little bit of steal reinforcement cost me a hundred but with out Andy I would be still stationary as ford no longer service this part loved to have sent picture but this part was in a place a good picture was impossible should have taken one when part was out but as I’m a taxi driver I was just happy tobe on the road again thanks for all suggestions and diagram of under transmission ded handy
