Title: 2.3 LPG auto no.2 spark plug unwound?!
Post by bernjmays on Mar 5th, 2008, 2:58pm
I had lumpy tickover and what sounded like back firing. Limped home. Upon ivestigation coil pack 'down pipe' on no. 2 plug on 2.3 had been eaten away! Swapped coil packs from 2.0 but on starting up got loud popping noises, no. 2 spark plug eventually came out by itself.  It seems to have worked  itself out probably over a period of weeks (I had noticed LPG smell in interior of car in previous weeks). My problem is I cannot now get spark plug to go back in any further than about 5 turns (other plugs go in about 15 turns). I wish to clean out no.2 spark plug hole (as it is probably clogged with carbon etc)with a 'tap' (as in taps & dies). What size tap do I need and what type of thread? Thanks.

To clean out the thread in a spark plug hole - this is the old method I was shown many years ago - take an old spark plug and make some cuts in the thread ( down the length of the thread so it looks like a tap ) with a hacksaw blade - 3 or 4 should be enough, and then screw in by hand a few turns, back it out and clean the muck out of the threads, repeat until you can screw it all the way in by hand or with very little resistance using a socket. Good luck, hope you get it sorted.

The worse case senario is that the threads have been melted as the plug has worked its way up cos it wasn't tightened properly, high temp on alloy can cause it to melt due to not have'ing much thickness to the threads.
have seen it before.

Hope I'm wrong.... ???

Tried Scorpio_Mike suggestion, it worked but only highlighted the fact that PeteHull was right, threads have all melted!
Can I swop head from my 2.0? Are there any other easier options? Many thanks for your help.

Try a google search for spark plug re-threading OR have a look at www.international-tool.co.uk.  They do a tool and inserts for less than £6. ;) Here http://www.international-tool.co.uk/products/default.asp?Keyword=ITC1336&Submit=GO&type=search.

Hi Bernjmays. It is possible to fit a 2.0ltr head to a 2.3 block & from what i understand it,s not too difficult either.Matt would be the best person to talk to ,as he has already done this to his 2.3 estate.
