Title: smokey 2.3 startup Post by gawsworthboy on Mar 7th, 2008, 12:56pm Hi all, just bought a 97 2.3 ghia and get quite a lot of smoke when starting first thing in the morning? Clears completely after about 5 mins normal driving. Does anyone know of any addatives that might help stop this.....she has just done 100,000 miles and has full service history so I'm putting it down to wear and tear....cheers. |

Title: Re: smokey 2.3 startup Post by gawsworthboy on Mar 7th, 2008, 1:48pm Hi, mix of bluish grey I'd say...no loss of engine oil so assume it's sitting on top of the cylinders overnight and burning off on startup...how long do you think it will be before the engine gives up? |

Title: Re: smokey 2.3 startup Post by Matt on Mar 7th, 2008, 7:46pm you probably have a valve seal leaking which over night leaks into a combustion chamber hence the smoke on first start up, wont be very bad as its not smoking all the time, keep an eye on your oil level, the seal kits for the 2.3 arnt that expensive as it happens Full head set (including head gasket and head bolts) £70 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HEAD-GASKET-SET-AND-BOLTS-FORD-GALAXY-SCORPIO-Y5B-Y5A_W0QQitemZ4558105895QQihZ011QQcategoryZ21654QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262 ive used these guys before doing my cossie and the kits are top notch |

Title: Re: smokey 2.3 startup Post by gawsworthboy on Mar 7th, 2008, 8:43pm Hi again, I am in Macclesfield, cheshire....might attempt myself if no heavy lifting...anyone detailed the job so I can replicate the process? .can I ask Matt....noticed today that the autobox revs really high before selecting 3rd gear...if I throttle gently it doesn't seem to do it so much....fluid is all OK....dya think the box may be failing too? Cheers...Steve |

Title: Re: smokey 2.3 startup Post by Matt on Mar 7th, 2008, 8:49pm possibly but that can also be caused my a dirty MAF sensor if you leave the head on there wont be much lifting at all, but you'll need to re time the engine as you'll need to take the cams out to replace the valve seals. personally id take the head off and regrind the valves in and you can also have a look at the state of your pistons |

Title: Re: smokey 2.3 startup Post by gawsworthboy on Mar 7th, 2008, 8:52pm Yes, cleaned the MAF as it was a bit grubby but same thing happening after cleaning......I've been told that the bands can be adjusted with a special tool...is that correct? |

Title: Re: smokey 2.3 startup Post by savvy on Mar 13th, 2008, 1:06pm My old 2.9 12v used to smoke hugely on start up on cold cold mornings (and evenings) especially if left over a period of time. Would do it for about 2 minutes until warm and then be ok. Wasn't blue though so I'm guessing was condenstation in my case... |
