Title: Bits in auto-box sump. Post by Peter. on Apr 6th, 2008, 6:25pm Hi everyone, great site you have here. I found my dad a scorpio last year - a P reg 2.9 12V Ultima, which was very local to me. He has not been well and couldn't drive his manual car, so I talked him into a nice comfy automatic. It was very cheap (£400) so we have no complaints, but he's developed a problem selecting gears. The car was fine to drive originally, except that it would always take 5 seconds or so to select reverse, no big deal we thought at the time. In the past couple of weeks it's becoeme worse and once got stuck in 2nd gear. He was climbing a steep hill and the box wouldn't shift-down so he put it in 2nd on the stick, which it did engage but then once back in drive it stayed in 2nd and he had to drive home in that gear. Since then, the car would not select reverse when hot, but would do so when cold. Having read through the pages her eI decided to drop the sump off and change the oil. I did this last night, but when I dropped the sump I found these in the pan. http://peterrimmer.myby.co.uk/images/sumpfod1.jpg I also found the gauze filter to be damaged as if it had been poked-through. Since re-filling with oil, the car now will select reverse again when cold but only after waiting 12-15 seconds. Once it selects reverse it will move away smartly enough. Anybody recognise these tiny parts I found? Could them being missing be the cause for the box not to work properly? Any advice will be highly appreciated before I shell-out for a gearbox that will likely cost more than the car did originally. Pete. |

Title: Re: Bits in auto-box sump. Post by Tompion on Apr 6th, 2008, 7:07pm There are little steel spacers in the cork sump gasket that can stick to the sump instead of coming away with the gasket - that's what they look like. |

Title: Re: Bits in auto-box sump. Post by Peter. on Apr 6th, 2008, 8:51pm Thanks Simmo and Tompion. The oil didn't smell unusually bad (certainly nowhere as bad as used EP90). It was a little brown but you could still see the redness in it. I guess the box is on it's way out. Perhaps the oil-change will make it last a few thousand miles more whilst we find a replacement. |

Post by Peter. on Apr 7th, 2008, 9:28pm Right I've spoken to him and he's checked the oil after a run, parked on the level with the engine idling and the box in park. He says the oil level is spot-on. It'll still not go into reverse until it's stood around for an hour or more, but does when cold. Another symptom I forgot to mention before was that it will sometimes stall in second when it comes to a standstill. Not that the engine dies-off, it fails to release the load on the box and stalls as if it's a manual coming to a stop without dipping the clutch. |

Title: Re: Bits in auto-box sump. Post by Peter. on Apr 9th, 2008, 8:16pm Lets just say I eat a lot of carrots :D Car drives finse now except for the reverse. Using reverse seems to be pressurising the gearbox, as it blows smoke out of the dipstick tube. Still works only when cold :( |
