I have an intermittent fault developing on my 12valve.

From time to time the speedo needle gets erratic and on a couple occasions recently it has slept for four or five minutes and then bursts into life mid journey.

Alongside this, the cruise control stops working at the same times as the needle wobbles or when it is sleeping.

Pressing the cruise buttons repeatedly can sometimes lead to the speedo needle coming back on duty (there may be no linkage) my first thought at this point is vss, anybody have any other ideas?

Def the VSS is the place to start, Mine was exactly the same before I replaced it .

Especially as its sat for a while Geoff, they seem to do that if they havent moved for a while, maybe just dirt or a wee bit rust

Might be worth a go, however on the ones i've seen doing it it happens for a while after they start being driven again then it clears itself.
