Title: erratic tickover Post by big_timer on Jul 3rd, 2008, 3:58pm ive just noticed that my 2.3 ultima manuals tickover is a tad erratic.on normal tickover its about 850-900rpm then all of a sudden it goesup to 1100 for a second then drops back down again.it doesnt do it all the time and ticks over lovely usually i am just wondering whether it would have anything to do with the car holding back(as described in previous post) im gonna service it.next week, could any of the scorpions tell me a good oil and sparkies and general things to look out for when servicing my precious. any advice from an owner would be greatly appreciated. atb ;D |

Title: Re: erratic tickover Post by Jonnycab on Jul 4th, 2008, 3:04am Regarding the erratic tickover, remove the idle control valve & give it a good spray inside with carb cleaner to remove all the soot, then drop a little 3in1 oil onto the shaft to lubricate it.....this may help :) If the car is holding back, but not necassarily misfiring, then old spark plugs could be the culprit ;) I tend to stick to the Ford Motorcraft plugs....'AGPS 22P1' for the 2.3. They are about £7.00 each, slightly cheaper than the NGK ones & I find they last longer & are better. Just personal opinion though ;) As for the oil......5W/30 semi synthetic is best suited to the 2.3, although I use AC Delco 5W/30 fully synthetic which is even better & no more expensive.....get it for £20 for 5 litres from local motor factors :).....also, obviously change the oil filter as well ;) I would also advise using an oil flush like 'Wynns engine flush'. Add it to the old oil, warm the engine up for a bit & then drain it. It gets all the sludge & deposits out of the oil ways etc :) You also might want to replace the fuel filter if you don't know when it was last replaced.....also air & pollen filters depending on how dirty they look :) |

Title: Re: erratic tickover Post by big_timer on Jul 14th, 2008, 8:50am thanks jon serviced over the weekend.engine flush, ngk platinum sparkers.shell 5w/30 fully synthetic oil.coopers oil filter.the car seems to have been well looked after.nice and dry engine bay. BUT,once i took the sparkplug cover off it seems apparent that the coil looms are in bad shape showing bare wires and insulating tape.i stripped the plastic gator back to uncover more bare wire.i think this could be a cause of the erratic tickover.i took the wire back, separated id and recovered with new tape approx 8 inches from the multiplug. is this loom easy to replace? are they ford looms? how much? the car is going brilliant.you just have to look at the key and it starts. apart from the dull knocking from the front.i had a look and there seems to be movement from the rear wishbone bushes.they are being replaced on wednesday. |

Title: Re: erratic tickover Post by Tompion on Jul 14th, 2008, 9:03am It's the Fuel Cut-off Loom here: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/dohcloom.htm Last time I tried fordpartsuk sometime ago they could have got one, other people have said they're not available. Make sure the centre bolts for the wishbone bushes aren't tightened until the weight of the car is on the wheels. |
