Title: Instrument panel
Post by ren on Aug 9th, 2008, 8:30pm
Hi hope someone can tell me what problem i have,
as you all know those that have cruise control, and
overdrive,when c/c is engaged and/or O/D is selected,
you have a light indicating operation, now what i need to
know is why? when my side/head lights are OFF,the
respective symbols are displayed, but when i put side/
head light ON,the symbols dont light up.

Is it possible that they automatically dim?. Have you actually tried this at night in full darkness??.

They are informative symbols so if they do dim,
it should  not be so much that you cant see them,
I have the car in the garage with a coat over, making
as much darkness as i can,and if S/H ON no illumination
if S/H off i have illumination.
Now someone will ask how did i check the C/C in the
garage, well to surprise you (no i aint got a rolling road)
I havent, cus even i know, i cant do 30mph in my garage, can only get to 27 then the door stops me,
but i could check the O/D when lights were ON it was
not there, turn lights OFF and it there.

Am I not correct in thinking that the o/d light comes on when o/d is disengaged and is normally OFF when it is engaged ??

You are so right in that,

When i dissengage my O/d my light comes on  OK

If i dont switch my side/headlights on it stays on  OK

When I switch my side/headlights on It goes off    OK

Now that is what i trying to find out WHY when it shouldnt, if i dissengage my O/d it should stay on
irrespective of  my headlights being on or off         OK

the same happens to the cruise control, you use the
paddle switch on the steering wheel to engage it,
must be doing 30mph or above tho or it dont work,
and the light shows its active, when i turn the lights
on the c/c stays active in speed control but light as
gone out,and it shouldnt.

The headlight switch is doing something like shorting
out these 2 info lights, but i dont know how they
connected,when i used O/D and C/C last wednesday
they worked as they should how bizzay1 states.

I would imagine the problem is in the instrument panel, possibly a bad earth.

If it was a bad earth in the instrument panel,

they wouldnt come on at all would they,

or they would be on and off  werever the

headlight swich was.

I suggested a bad earth in as much a bad earth can cause odd things to happen such as happens with rear lights where for example 2 or more bulbs effectively end up in series - one comes on another goes off or dims. Not necessarily suggesting a bad main earth, just the possibility of an earthing problem in the instrument panel circuitry.
My cruise control light has a mind of it’s own, plays up more in hot weather, as does the airbag light. I’m fairly sure it’s a problem in the instrument panel, but not managed to find it.

Lets look at this, anyone know if the wiring behind the
driverside headlight/spotlight/indicator, were the cruise control box (whats it called) fits.
Called in the garage this morning and the spark is on hols,
mech said B/C it only a problem when i turn the lights on,
the switch may be shorting, when power connected,or  the
wiring around the headlight may be shorting the cruise box.
any thoughts on that anyone, someone on here must have
changed a cuise control and know how it wired.

Yes I was answering the question.
I'm saying there's a possibility of a problem in the instrument panel that occurs when the panel back lights go on - which they do when you turn on the headlights.
