hi mick,
well it was dirty...but no nasty bits in the old fluid,in fact inside the sump was not to bad...filter looked worse...i also found that some of the bolts that hold the valve block were a little loose so i nipped them up.so all in all..a job well done...are you thinking of doing the same job??....regards den. :).

Nice one  ;)

Was an  ATF change  ever listed in any  official  Scorpio  service  guide ?

I  don't  think a fluid change  can  save  an already stricken  autobox  but it  can  prolong  the  life  of  a  functioning  one.

heliphil50.
Screen assy(filter) F4000411 £17.36 plus VAT
Gasket F6941997 £14.78 plus VAT
ATF £7- £10 per 5 litre plus VAT.
Whining may be normal mechanical wear on low gear.

thank you for the info gozz...heliphil50.i did the job on my car ramps...on my back on our daughters driveway..its not that hard to do..just a little messy..i got all the parts from my local A1 motor stores,as i do get a discount, the atf was £30..the filter was £20..(inc new 'o' rings)..and a new autobox sump gasket was £17...fpuk maybe a little bit cheaper but you do have to wait for the parts to come through the post..thats ok if your in no hurry...but our daughter needed her car..so we bought the parts over the counter at the local A1 store.im going to be doing this work on my mk3 scorpio.regards den. :).ps..as has been said in other posts about this work..the bolt that holds the new filter in place on the valve block,is to long to use with the new filter....but i never cut the bolt to size..i packed it out with spacers until i got it at the right length and it bolted up the new filter without any problems.

Why is the bolt too long....is the new filter smaller than the old one ?

Also, how much ATF did you manage to drain out of it Den ?  :)

The filters are the same size, but the bolt is recessed into the filter & for some inexplicable reason the recess is now deeper on the new filters.

hi jc,well all in all...i drained out just under 5ltrs...i refitted the sump to catch some more fluid overnight..and a further 1ltr came out...so i would think about 4.5ltrs...i put in the whole 5ltrs of the new fluid....and that came up to the max mark on the dip-stick...after a warm up...and a run....its still the same level...the only thing that annoyed me was i had to take out 3 of the 4 bolts and swing the tie bar out of the way...to allow the gearbox sump to be removed...the tie bar bolts were quite tight...so that added to the work load.but well worth doing because the end result is an auto box that selects and changed gear, i feel as it should SMOOTHLY. :)..regards to all..den. :)..ps..are you thinking of doing this job jc?.
