Title: Taking ages to start, turn over/idle problem
Post by smitheagle on Nov 16th, 2008, 11:06pm
My Scorpio has this week started playing up.

It sometimes can take up to a minute with the key turned to actually fire up, i have to sit there and wait whilst it tries to start. It slowly tries to start up then gets quicker and quicker, louder, nearly turning over until is eventually does.

The other problem im guessing could be relating, is that when ive been driving for a while (for me, a while is like 20 odd minutes) it fails to idle properly and when i slow down to stop at lights or in traffic, it just stalls/cuts out, im having to break in neutral and quickly swap pedals and rev the engine until i can use handbrake and keep the engine revs up.

My water also seems to be leaking/disappearing, having to fill up every other day when i hear both fans kick in

Any ideas?

sounds like h/gasket, cracked head problems, any sign of emulsification on your oil dip stick.

Is it firing on all cylinders,is the exhaust steamy? it could be a coincidental combination of something like a faulty throttle position sensor and leaky head gasket.Obviously the coolant is going somewhere,if you can't see it,or if it isn't in the oil it must be going out of the exhaust.

Could be a problem with the fuel rail pressure regulator  :-/

As for the water leak, if it's bad then you should be able to see a drip somewhere or if not, then look around the cooling system for white residue caused by evaporation. Also the header tanks have a habit of splitting underneath.

What engine is it ?  :)

Hi all

Sorted out water leak, was a hose connection limescaled up, i disconnected it, cleaned it up, put it back on and now fine.

Still not starting for ages! Put a new battery in it (as old one died doing this all the time) and still the same. A friend of mine who specialises in Cossies mentioned the fuel pressure regulator, and so has Jonnycab so gonna look into that!

Is it easy to replace/fix?

Sorry, to answer some more questions... The head gasket is fine, oil is fine.

Hi,
have you had a scan yet to confirm?

I did mine a while ago, slight (easier) mod to info on site, I posted it here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1126099625).

Good luck

Cossie fuel rail pressure regulator replacement is here  :).....

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelreg.htm

It was just a guess.....but I've had a similar problem with the fuel regulator on my 2.3, in that it took 3 or 4 turns to start the engine when it was hot. I'd imagine if the regulator was really shot, then it could cause all kinds of starting & running problems  ;)

Fingers crossed that you've got the right diagnoses  :)
