Title: 2.9 12v Won't start, Just Clicks
Post by themanager30 on Dec 28th, 2008, 2:17pm
went to get my car which I lent to a friend/ He wasn't around so I took the master key.

I unlocked the car from the passenger side (the drivers door has been replaced in the past) but when I tried to start it all I got was a fast ticking noise and the red light on the dash flicking. My first thought was immobilser but why?

Since then Ive tried the keys I usually use but with the same result.

The battery was flat about a month ago and I charged it up. Im thinking the battery is dying again but would that cause the ticking noise?

It does sound as though you have a flat battery  :)

Yes the clicking noise is the starter solenoid trying to engage and there is NOT enough power in the battery to turn it over. Typical symptom of a FLAT or DEAD battery in COLD weather

If you recharge or replace the battery and the problem is still there, an oldfashion way to resolve a stuck startermotor problem, is pong it gently with a hammer to get it going.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Got round to changing the batt this morning (PITA) and it started first time. Gonna keep an eye on it because the guy I bought the car off said the battery was relatively new.

Might have a drain somewhere.

The details and specification of the battery are Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/battery.htm). Anything of lesser capacity will not handle the power needed by these cars. A classic symptom is exactly what you experienced in that they will often turn the engine over BUT not have sufficient power to actually start it.  :)

I dont :)

They dont list the Scorpio

their Granada battery is only 540 CCA

and their Granada Scorpio battery while it is rated at 680 CCA has the wrong terminals ;)

Have a look at This company...Varta.. (http://www.varta.com/eng/). They list one for the Scorp BUT check the terminals. (They mention Ford adapter). I have had one for over 3years but the detail does not come up on their current site.  Mine was listed as an E 10, part number, 571014068,Blue Dynamic. I seem to recall that it was the same as a Transit Battery and it had the correct terminals. :)

Varta are really helpful. The Ford adapter are just a couple of metal brackets, simple but work well.

I have always used BANNER (http://www.bannerbatterien.com/banner/produkte/batterien/index2_en.php) and found them extremely reliable . I always used the high power ones though, and  they DO come with the correct terminals.

I got the OEM battery from Ford as my mate works there for £40 inc vat which I thought was good.

It is indeed bigger in size than the one it replaced which may have been the problem, and I bought a solar trickle charger to hopefully keep it topped up.
