Title: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Jul 29th, 2009, 4:46pm Now seriously! This is making me maaaaad My steering is very wobbly when I brake. I just got new discs+pads.. After detaching caliper and them, problem was GONE. Now its back. Discs doesnt look like warped. And I know what really warped looks like }{ |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by gozz on Jul 29th, 2009, 5:23pm Tekno. It could just be due to slight overnight corrosion where the pads touch the discs,try standing on the brakes at high speed,this will also tend to straighten out slightly warped discs as well. GOZZ. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by harry.m1byt on Jul 29th, 2009, 9:50pm Mine were new and the wobbly got worse and worse, to the point where I was about to order up some more - then I read about a theory with regards to stresses building up in the disks. The cure is to get the disks good and hot, then let them cool down slowly whilst still rotating - just as Gozz suggests. I did three high speed (almost) stops, with full acceleration in between up to 70+, after which I drove the car for a good few minutes to allow the disks to fully cool down without stopping. It was an immediate and permanent no cost cure. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Geoff_W on Jul 30th, 2009, 10:22am Bushes sorted it for me. Went through a period where I had two sets of pads and three pairs of front disks under warranty so no charge to me on my 2.0ltr, but the problem kept coming back, for all the world like warped disks. Quite separately had new set of bushes and the problem went. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Jonnycab on Sep 10th, 2009, 1:07am Are you sure it's the bearing & not worn track rod inner ball joints or worn wishbone bushes causing the wheel movement ? :) |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by a900one on Sep 10th, 2009, 7:30pm I had the same problem fitted a set of Halfords own brand pads, no I dont work for them, and after a short time the problem went away I think its because they are harder and wear the disc more. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Sep 27th, 2009, 7:28pm I have now changed the front hub. Bearing is now good. But still wobbly steering when braking. What are rear wishbone bushes? How to check their condition? And sure they make steering wobble when braking? |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by gozz on Sep 27th, 2009, 11:05pm Rear wishbone bush is the large bush at the back of the front suspension track control arm or 'wishbone',they break up with use and allow the wishbone to move in and out thus causing tyre wear,wandering steering and sometimes a wobble.It is plain to see if they are collapsing because the wishbone does not sit centrally in the bushes,and if you look inside the void you will see cracks in the rubber which open up when levered sideways.Sometimes people fit these bushes wrongly causing premature failure,the metal collar has a small gap in it which should be at the top,and the big nuts must not be tightened until the car is on the ground and rolled to and fro to assume it's correctly settled position GOZZ. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Matt on Sep 29th, 2009, 7:11pm did you use a quality discs? scorpios are hard on them and warp cheaper ones very quickly |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Sep 29th, 2009, 7:20pm TRW branded. No idea about their quality. I'm going to change outer track arm joints. If that doesn't help -> Upgrade to cossie brakes with quality discs. |

Didn't you replace almost all of you front suspension components already? Wisbones, track rod ends, bearings, drop link arms etc. Mine is sometimes a bit wobbly, but it depends really much on the road surface. And i use 225/50R16. Is it a sidewards wobbling, or bouncy up&down or steering wandering? |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Oct 2nd, 2009, 11:45am sidewards.. I have replaced Track rod ends, both bearings are ok now, link rods, front stabilizer bushes. Sometimes braking is ok but sometimes this wobbliness comes. like every second brake.. how is that possible ?!?! |

And the rear arm bushes, they are OK? I have sidewards movement sometimes too, I should probably have as a precaution done mine when replacing springs. But mostly I have on a specific place on the way home from work, so it might just be worn road. It might be you have the same, but worse. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Oct 3rd, 2009, 10:26am do you mean front arm rear bushes? ??? |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by tlundkvi on Oct 3rd, 2009, 2:36pm No rear, you know the bushes that are on the rear arm (or rear wishbone or whatever it's called). Part 6&8: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/rearsuspension96on.gif |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Oct 3rd, 2009, 4:39pm Well I think problem is somewhere in front.. It just feels that. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Oct 4th, 2009, 10:34pm Should there be wear sensors in brake pads? I ripped them off so pads have holes. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by gozz on Oct 4th, 2009, 10:41pm No wear sensors on Scorpio pads,some Granadas had em,but the end of the pad backplate is not quite the same where it fits into the caliper although the friction pads are the same shape. GOZZ. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Oct 25th, 2009, 2:25pm Just replaced front calipers and pads (they are from -93 Granada 2.9 24V) Problem still exists.. Waiting for new discs to arrive from camskill.co.uk :) I ordered EBC GD831 (278mm vented+drilled+grooved) Pads are Ferodos.. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by tlundkvi on Oct 25th, 2009, 4:38pm Tekno, after your bearing and track rod end fix, did you align your wheels at a professional? Are the discs the last thing that is still "old" in your car? It sounds a bit weird the brake discs or calipers can have anything to do with steering, unless the problem is when braking and steering at the same time. |
||
|
Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Oct 25th, 2009, 5:30pm yep, wheels are aligned correctly.. wobble comes ONLY when I touch the brake pedal. But sometimes not at all. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Highlander on Oct 25th, 2009, 5:40pm Have you changed the rear wishbone bushes? http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/rearbush.jpg |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Oct 25th, 2009, 5:50pm no. but. rear? how could that affect directly to steering. I can certainly feel something is wrong with front end. Or is that front arm rear bush? :confused |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Highlander on Oct 25th, 2009, 6:00pm The rear bush on the front wishbone, top one in this pic http://i36.tinypic.com/ig9e2x.jpg |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Oct 25th, 2009, 6:20pm ugh. Horrible job isn't it. Once already detached that side which connects to front hub.. was very difficult to open bolts etc and hammer it out ::) |
||
|
Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Highlander on Oct 25th, 2009, 6:23pm No, they can be replaced with the wishbone on the car. remove the 4 x 10mm bolts holding it on then the large nut on the rear of the wishbone and the bush slides off.. I'm assuming you havent changed them then, that'll be your problem if the discs dont sort it |

Maybe in Finland front and rear are round the other way?? ;) The clamp holding the rear bush is pictured at 1 on this picture (these are the ones which could be causing the problem) No 2 is the front bush towards the front of the car (this is the one being ground off in your picture above) http://i35.tinypic.com/vrf2pw.jpg |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tekno on Oct 25th, 2009, 8:28pm ahh, so large nut on the rear = bush itself ??? |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Highlander on Oct 25th, 2009, 8:42pm Are you pulling my leg?? ;) The bush slides onto the rear of the wishbone (bottom right of this picture) Then a large washer and nut are tightened onto the threaded part to hold it in place. That is the nut you need to remove to replace it http://www.made-in-china.com/image/2f0j00hMWTsEedAPkqM/Control-Arm-for-Ford-7372345-7372346-.jpg |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by Tompion on Oct 25th, 2009, 8:57pm Put your foot on top of a front tyre and push either way (trying to rotate the wheel) if the wheel tries to turn (steer) then the bush is worn. Alternatively get someone else to try and turn the wheel whilst you reach under the car and feel how much the bush flexes. |

Title: Re: Wobbly steering AGAIN Post by lleewar on Oct 26th, 2009, 11:46pm Tekno, replacing the bushes is an easy job to do. Highlanders diagram shows the position of the bush to be replaced. This is on the FRONT radius arm /wishbone and it's the bush towards the rear of the car that is the one to be replaced. Remove the bracket with the four 10mm bolts , lever the radius arm/wishbone down and using the correct socket, undo the nut and remove the bush by sliding it off. When replacing the bush, make sure the slot on the bush itself is at the top. Replace the nut, but do not tighten fully until the vehicle is on the ground and the bush has the full vehicle load on it, then fully tighten the nut. Repeat on the other side. They can be purchased from fords for 15.97 each plus vat/around 36.00 |
