Title: Heater flap problem again
Post by Jonnycab on Sep 13th, 2009, 1:48am
I posted a problem a while back about the heater flap seeming to jam on the drivers side.

It is now evident that it's not a flap problem & not even a motor problem, but some other problem.

Basically, the flap motor on the drivers side keeps going out of sync  ???.
When I do a CC reset it goes even more out of sync to the point where it starts clicking loudly.
I've watched what happens when the reset is done....& what happens is....

The motor goes back & forth like normal for the first part of the reset, but when the '00' starts flashing, the quadrant on the motor does a complete 90 degree anti-clockwise turn.

If I do another reset, it goes back & forth & then tries to do another 90 degree anti-clockwise turn but can't because it hits the the plastic stops on the heater box.

The only way to get it back to normal is to remove the motor & do 2 more resets (180 degrees) to get it back to the position it should be  ::)

I've tried a different motor & different CC panel, & was wondering about trying another SATC.....but I don't think that is the answer  :-/

This is now starting to drive me a bit potty  ::)

Strange behaviour indeed , The car isn't female is it? Like christine?

Joking apart JC another SATC would either confirm or remove the problem I am sure elimination is the way to go.

It seems to have behaved itself today  ::).....Maybe it is female ?...... it was about a month ago it last started playing up  ;D

If it happens again, I'll replace the SATC.....& if that doesn't work, then maybe I'll call an exorcist  :o...... ;D

Right then....I've tried a different SATC module & there is no change  ::).....the problem still exists  ???

Does anybody have any idea whatsoever as to why this is happening ?  :)

Update 18/9/09.....I read my original post about this problem a couple of months ago & forgot that I'd already tried a different SATC  ::)

hi there

how does the motor know when it's homed?

are there flags to tell when it's reached the top and when it's reached the bottom?

it must have someway of knowing.  :-/

could be like the flywheel with one 'special' tooth. :-/

maybe the 'reader' has some dirt on it.

all the above is just thinking aloud. ;)

Hi Andy, I've managed to get the motor teeth properly aligned with the flap teeth & for the moment it's behaving itself again. There is a 'special' tooth on the motor which is half the length of the other teeth, but not sure why this is  :-/

One other thing I notice is maybe the reason why it is going 90 degrees out when doing a reset....it's a bit hard to explain but here goes......the plastic stop on the heater box that I think is supposed to prevent the motor from going 90 degrees out is worn down & the motor is getting past this stop, but then jamming up as it trys to go any further round when doing another reset, hence having to remove the motor & resetting it while loose.

Also, what is the 'reader' ?  :)

hi jon

i thought there might be some sort of magnet 'reader' type of set up.

are you able to build up the stop flag with glue/resin?

That's what I'll have to try & do I think, but it's a bit inaccessible  :)

hey, you've done a heater matrix, so this should be easy!! }{

Right then, again  ;)..... it looks like my diagnosis may have been wrong, in that I said there wasn't a 'blend flap' (it's proper name) problem.....there is !!! (like I said in my old post about this problem a couple of months ago)....& there is also a problem described as above with the worn motor stop.

So that's two problems in one  ::)

Regarding the blend flap....for some reason, when left in the closed (cold) position, after about half an hour, the flap seems stuck/jammed so hard that the motor can't turn it & ends up jumping a few teeth & putting itself out of sync. Then, of course, when I do a reset the motor rotates 90 degrees because the stop is worn.

I can hopefully make the motor stop good again....got some 'Devcon Plastic Steel Putty' in the shed....better than Quik Steel, JB Weld etc  8).....HERE (http://www.itw-devcon.co.uk/index.php?/devcon_mro/epoxy_maintenance_repair_and_overhaul_systems/devcon_plastic_steel_putty_a/)

But as for the flap jamming shut after half an hour of being in the same position....that's really starting to confuse me  ::)

The flap seems to move quite freely when you rotate the end by hand & there is no jamming felt at either stop, but for some reason, if left for some time in the cold position, it's seems to jam up & I have to use a pair of mole grips to free it  ???

What could be causing this ?......I'm thinking that maybe the flap has foam around the edges, or foam around the aperture in the heater box. Maybe over the years, the heat from the matrix has caused this foam to dry out & crumble leaving a sticky tack around the edges. Maybe it takes a little while for the flap to actually stick to this tack....& that is why the flap is jamming  :-/

If anyone has a heater box out of the car at the moment & has it apart, then could they confirm this theory ?  :)

JC. The flaps inside the air vents certainly have a foam strip round them to effect a seal. Could you try spraying some silicone into the affected area to see if that prevents the 'adhesion' which seems to be a logical thought or even WD40?. ;)

Cheers Mike  ;).....I'll give it a burst of silicon spray.....it's just getting it in there that's the problem  ::).....maybe if I pull off the side vent pipe from the heater box it'll give me access  :)

Thanks tekno, but I don't suppose you have a picture of the other side of the box (your passenger side, my drivers side)  :)

Cheers guys for the pics, now I know what I'm looking at from a decent angle & not upside down  ;)
Looks like I'll be able to get a good spray of lubricant onto the flap through the side vent outlet  :)
