Title: Air bags
Post by Wadman on Apr 21st, 2010, 2:24pm
I read recently where a person was injured when his air bags deployed and the bag stiching didn't hold because of the bag's age.
As my Scorpio is 1998, just out of curiosity, I got a quote for replacing both front bags. Can you imagine £950 for supply and fit.
What does the team think about air bag safety?

Hold on, I saw a telly programme a while ago that showed how airbags were designed and how the explosive thingy worked, also that it's supposed to burst / deflate almost immediately (there are special rupture seams or something), actually it must cos that's how it absorbs the energy, if it doesn't it will cause even more damage.

Even a soft pillow will hurt if you're whacked into it hard enough. ;D

Ok thanks for that.
Does anyone think the replacement idea is a bit OTT?

We managed perfectly OK in the past without air-bags, ABS and even I can remember when seat belts were optional extras, as were laminated winscreens - remember Triplex Zebrazone toughened windscreens ?

I know a couple of people who've had accidents where the air-bag didn't deploy and another who had an air-bag deploy while they were just driving along - nearly caused them to have an accident !

I could go on but I'll end up rambling about contact breakers, condensors, rotor arms, feeler guages and the like...those days weren't so bad after all, such a simple life, wasn't it :-)

Obviously I recall seeing the logo on the windscreen of my dad's car ;-)

1st of January 1963, any car manufactured after then, (I think) had to have provision for seat-belts.   That was the first very old 'A' reg.   The registration system turned over from January 1963, to January '67 'E' reg,  but then in August 1967, ('E' reg was the short year) the new 'F' reg cars came out in August '67.   From then on for a long time, the registration change was in August.
