Title: 2.3 Won't start when hot
Post by nodge on Aug 18th, 2010, 5:49pm
A few weeks ago I posted that my scorp wouldn't start after a short 10 minute drive. It would turn over fine and each time I tried it actually fired for about a second but then stopped instantly. No coughing or spluttering. After leaving it for maybe 45 mins it started and ran fine. I thought the problem was the fuel pump relay so I replaced that and thought all was well as I had no problems for a couple of weeks. Exactly the same thing happened again the other day though. After waiting 45 mins all was well again. I've since been on a long drive and it started first time when I stopped.

Do you think it could be the fuel pressure regulator? I've been through the troubleshooting on the website and seems it could be a possibility. Not sure it would cause the instant "cut off" that I'm getting though. If it happens again is there an easy way of checking it? If the problem was due to excess pressure is it possible to bleed it off through the test valve?

Or any other ideas?

If it’s the fuel pressure regulator it’s more likely the other way round – not enough pressure/not holding pressure.
With a hot engine if the fuel pressure drops too soon when the engine is off the fuel may vaporise and cause a vapour lock making it difficult to start until it cools down.
You could try turning the ignition to position one a few times as the pump will run for a few seconds each time & may build up pressure before you try to start it.

A bit more info... I had thought this was completely intermittent but it seems the problem is repeatable. I just took the car for a 10 min drive to warm it up. When I got home I turned it off and it restarted immediately. I waited 10 mins and tried again and it wouldn't start. I'm thinking more and more that it is a fueling problem and Tompion could well be right that I'm getting a vapour lock building up. So would a new fuel pressure regulator fix this?

I did try turning the ignition to position 1 a few times to run the fuel pump to try and build up pressure but it didn't help.

It may be, an OBD scan will give you a definite answer

This was never resolved was it? And now it's up for sale as a non-runner ~ think now maybe got too hung up on fuel pumps etc. when it could be a simpler electrical issue, or a sensor which virtually amounts to the same thing
