Title: whats that treacle stuff for the engine???????????
Post by tiggerlit on Jan 19th, 2011, 9:14pm
hiya unless im losing it but can you get some stuff thats like real sticky treacle you can put in the engine to stop the tappets tapping. just as you know have had loads of hassle with the car and the head was done but the tappets (think thats what it is  :-/) are making a tapping noise when the engine is cold and the garage said the oil might not be getting to the top of them yet, but im sure ive read you can get this stuff that coats the inside better then the engine oil, you add it to the engine oil?
cheers

There are two likely causes before you start adding stuff to the oil. 1. Has the oil been changed recently and,if so, is it the right viscosity?. 2. Was the filter changed and if so is it a good quality one?. Some of the cheaper ones do not have a non-return valve and thus all the oil is allowed to drain back into the sump.
Details of spec is Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/engdata2.htm)

Personally, I would lay off any such additives. If the oil is any good it shouldn't need additives.
Once helped with a similar?? problem someone had with a Ford  Fusion...rattling tappet noise until warmed up.
Problem fixed by using 1 tube of AMSOIL cleaner in old oil followed by new Ford filter and AMSOIL 0/30 fully synthetic. A bit overkill but cheaper than garage.....
Not cheap oil .....  but I've always used it and the 5/30 fully synth on my 24v for past 5-6 years.
Hope this helps

thing is when the garage done the head with the new (second hand) cylinder head they asked for the  caps from the head as they said you cant use caps from another head due to the mould of it ?????, anyone else heard of this.

would it hurt to do what you done with your mates car the same way?

If the oil isn't getting to the heads when started from cold, then the last thing you need is something thick & gloopy  ???

When the oil was changed, was an engine flush used ?.....If not, then it could be that the oilways &/or oil pump are clogged with sludge & that is what's preventing the the head from getting oil when started from cold  :)

A loud tapping when started from cold can also eminate from a timing chain tensioner, although this tends to quieten down once the engine oil has bathed it  ;)

Loud tapping from the head can also be caused by a loose spark plug, so defo check the plugs are tight  :)

Not familiar with 2.3 engine...truth is I know zero....
However, cannot see it doing any harm using a quality flush and fully synthetic oil.
All I can say is it solved problem of sticking / slow to pump up hydraulic tappets and was cheaoer than Dealers solution of replacing them all.
Downside would be cost as I don't think you'll have much change out of £75.00.
Have you checked other items mentioned as may not be tappet problem.

Oil pump has screw which adjusts oil pressure. It's design flaw that the screw loosens itself causing oil pressure drop which can cause noisy tappets at least on idle, bad oil and cold climate.

I just fastened that and changed all 16 tappets, they aren't so expensive. See Parts2go.de and search for Ajusa branded tappets. My 2.3 runs like new now <3

hi thanks for all the replies and sorry if im doing your heads in  ;)

when i get a reply we look it over. the reply you have put tekno, where abouts is the pump is it where the oil pump chain is as trying to find a pic. also reading up on this when the head was done as you all know, would the oil pump chain been replaced?? just that im finding timing chain kits with them in, so im wondering if they have put the old one back on even though everything else was replaced. also with them moving it would it cause this by possible chance????
and to everyone else we are going to ask for a proper breakdown of what they did, as did they do a oil change? did they replace the filter?
im starting to wonder if we shouldnt of gone there.
but i do appreacte all the replies xox

Hi, sorry, ignorant female here, but mechanic isn't good on NET. possible Tappet problem, saw the above link to Parts2go.de and did a treanslation, but they have odd references after the Scorpio choices (GGE) etc, is this country ? mine is a Scorpio Ultima Estate Auto `1997. I have managed to find steel strip for making tank straps, but noticed 'tapping' while driving it next door to mechanic. He didn't want to dismantle to find out what type of tappets they are because he has work to do on it for MOT as a priority He said they could be adjustable or hydrolic? The car has only done just under 80,000 and I love it, but practicaly have to get everything for him. I realise the noise could be other things but need to be prepared with a point of purchase if necessary. thanks in advance for any help.

I've had this sometimes after standing a few days, speshly in Winter. It's "normal". ;D By the end of the road it stops rattling. I agree doubt the oil needs to be any thicker, quite the opposite needs to flow around freely and fill up the hydraulic tappets. Hence my reasoning for it being thicker in cold weather so more likely. (?)

Yes hydraulic and self adjusting. ;D

Before going down the road of fiddling with it I'd consider a good flush as suggested above.
